Jaume Munar stretched Alexander Zverev to two tiebreak sets in the Davis Cup. So much so, the match was over two hours. However, the Spaniard couldn’t give his country a crucial win in the tournament.

The Spaniard wasn’t impressed by himself after the defeat, so much so claiming that he was a ‘worse player’ than his opponent. Munar’s overall feeling was that it was a missed opportunity against the World No.3. Munar said in his post-match press conference:

I’m sad now, on the one hand… but this is how it is. It’s the reality of who I am and the position I’m in. Many people tell me I play at a higher level sometimes, and the reality is that today I showed that I don’t. Many times I was in advantageous situations, I didn’t take advantage of my opportunities, and then, in moments of tension, I basically showed that I’m a worse player than him . He, with very little, just by holding serve, managed to win both tiebreaks, and I couldn’t play well in those moments. That’s about it. Head down , time to get back to work.

Munar was selected as the last-minute replacement for Carlos Alcaraz. The World No.1 was scheduled to play the Davis Cup right after the ATP Finals.

However, Alcaraz pulled the plug on the last minute because of the injury sustained in the ATP Finals against Jannik Sinner. The Spaniard did arrive for Davis Cup, but withdrew after unsatisfactory results from the MRI.

Alexander Zverev gives worrying injury update after Davis Cup win

Alexander Zverev hasn’t had the most amazing season in 2025. Despite the Davis Cup win against Jaume Munar, the German gave a worrying fitness update. Zverev said in his post-match interview:

Happy to get the win. I’m not feeling my best, so, was lacking energy a little bit yesterday and overnight, but happy to get the point for our team, and now we’re going into the doubles just like last time.

Zverev’s fitness concerns have been there not just this Davis Cup but throughout the season. Ever since his Australian Open final loss, the World No.3 has had lapses in fitness, which has declined his overall form.

The problems have deepened as he couldn’t find support from his German teammates as Spain secured a 2-1 win. Now, the Spaniards will battle Italy for the Davis Cup title.

Alexander Zverev appreciated for his gentlemanly gesture in the Davis Cup

German tennis star Alexander Zverev has always gained huge respect across the dressing room. In the Davis Cup recently, the World No.3 has once again increased his level of respect in the eyes of Argentine Davis Cup captain Javier Frana.

Germany recovered from a 1-0 deficit to seal the tie against the South Americans. Zverev was the heartbeat behind the comeback, taking down Francisco Cerundolo. After Germany’s win, Frana had a friendly chat with the German Davis Cup captain Michael Kohlmann, where he mentioned Zverev:

I also asked him to pass on my thanks to Zverev, because he made a gesture towards my youngest son, who was very sad after the defeat. Stefano was sitting on the ground before the cars left, his eyes red from crying so much. Zverev walked by, greeted him, saw him, took a step, but came back to him, lifted him up, hugged him, spoke to him, and took a picture.

Zverev hasn’t been the biggest fan of Davis Cup. The German has criticized the format and the scheduling, and has been backed by numerous current and former players on this opinion.

With Germany’s Davis Cup over, Zverev can now look forward to a well-deserved rest before setting his sights for the Australian Open. It was the only shining light of a disappointing 2025 season, where Zverev made the finals.
