It’s still only the preseason, but Brian Daboll’s gamble on Jaxson Dart seems to be paying off. After a spotless debut against the Buffalo Bills, the rookie out of Ole Miss stood out again when the New York Giants hosted the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.

Russell Wilson began the game and played through the first quarter. Around the seven-minute mark in the second, Daboll decided to send Dart in for the first time.

Dart threw a sidearm pass to tight end Theo Johnson for a 30-yard carry. To everyone’s surprise, Dart left right after completing the pass.

The drive ended with Jets CB Qwan’tez Stiggers picking off Wilson in the end zone.

Daboll reinstated Dart into the game. He immediately threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to tight end Greg Dulcich to cap off a 70-yard drive.

Four minutes before the end of the third quarter, the Giants found themselves on second and goal. Dart lined up right behind his center and dived into the end zone for a successful quarterback sneak.

Giants fans raved about Jaxson Dart’s performance against the Jets

The Giants hit a massive roadblock after two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning retired from football. Duke graduate Daniel Jones was supposed to carry the torch for the G-Men, but he recorded 24 wins from 70 appearances during his six-year stay in the Big Apple.

Jones left near the end of October last year, leaving the Giants without a starting quarterback. Daboll searched for a veteran shot-caller as the mentor for their next franchise quarterback.

Wilson bagged the job with Jameis Winston added as a safety blanket. Daboll switched his attention to the draft and was heavily linked to Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.

The status quo had changed by the time the 2025 draft took place in Green Bay. Dart slowly replaced Sanders as the favorite. This angered many people, but the Giants stuck to their scouting and drafted Dart 25th overall, while Sanders fell to the fifth round.

Dart repaid Daboll and the Giants for showing faith in his abilities by posting 26 completions from 35 attempts for 291 yards, 2 passing TDs, 1 rushing TD, and zero interceptions.

The Giants secured their second preseason win with a 12-31 win against the Jets. After the game, reporters asked Dart to explain how he felt when Daboll took him off after just one play in the second quarter.

I was like, all right, I didn’t know that I was going to go in for one play and then come back out.

He may have been caught off guard, but it wasn’t a fluke try.

[Coach Daboll has] done it in practices. So I think that that kind of taught me that I need to continue to warm up on the sideline. You just never know when things like that are going to happen.

Dart added

Despite his inspiring performances, Dart will stay second in the quarterback depth chart behind Wilson.

Daboll was clear from very early during the offseason that the Giants plan to start week one football against the Washington Commanders with the Super Bowl winner under center. Before that, they must pass the challenge from the New England Patriots in their preseason finale.
