The New York Giants survived a massive scare on Thursday night. Quarterback Jaxson Dart found himself gasping for air after taking a big hit.

Dart was coming off two impressive preseason performances against the Buffalo Bills and the New York Jets. He quickly leaped over Jameis Winston as the favorite for the QB2 spot behind Russell Wilson.

Fans at the MetLife Stadium wanted more of the same in the finale. It did not take long for Dart to leave his mark on the fixture. He found tight end Greg Dulcich in the Patriots’ red zone to open the Giants’ scoring column in the first drive.

However, the early jubilation faded away after a few minutes. The Patriots blitzed Dart inside the Giants’ half, but before they could land a hit, the rookie shot caller managed to wriggle his way through.

Fans cheered loudly in the stands as Dart approached the 30-yard line. Patriots linebacker Jack Gibbens, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 242 pounds, threw his body on top of Dart’s back to force a fumble. His teammate recovered the ball, but they gave it back to the Giants for drawing a penalty flag.

Meanwhile, the cheering inside the stadium died down after seeing Dart’s erratic movement. JJ McCarthy’s fate in 2024 is still fresh in football fans’ memories.

The officials sent Dart to the blue tent to get him checked for a concussion. Moments later, a video of Dart entering the tent was uploaded on social media.

In the now viral clip, Dart was seen gesturing to the medical team to move quickly so that he could return to the game. Fans loved the urgency and passion Dart showed with his actions. At the same time, it also gave birth to a meme.

Unfortunately, Brian Daboll refused to allow him back in the game. Winston replaced him and instantly threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Jalin Hyatt.

Dart’s night ended with 6 completions from 12 attempts for 81 yards and one passing touchdown, aside from one carry for 23 yards that nearly gave him a concussion.

Jaxson Dart expressed disappointment for fumbling the ball

The Giants went on to secure a 10-42 victory to remain undefeated in the preseason. Winston contributed 4 completions, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception before Tommy DeVito’s 17 completions for 198 yards and 3 touchdowns performance.

Despite the win, fans eagerly waited to hear about Dart’s health. The 22-year-old at the post-game presser felt disappointed for fumbling the ball after Gibbens’ body slam. Moreover, it was the first time he was taken out of the game “for getting the air knocked out of” him.

Daboll was seen advising him to slide instead of diving headfirst into the ground.

If you’re going to take a big hit, then you slide. But I didn’t feel like I was in a situation where I was going to take a big hit, so I felt like I could extend the play… I just should’ve held onto the ball.

With the preseason finished, the Giants turn their attention to facing the Washington Commanders in week one of the 2025 season. Daboll has yet to decide on his QB2, but Dart has certainly upped his stock enough to get the nod ahead of Winston and DeVito. Fans certainly want to see him sooner rather than later.

The Giants traded back up to the first round to draft Dart 25th overall. He signed a four-year $17 million guaranteed contract with $9 million as a signing bonus.
