The PGA Tour-PIF deal picked up some pace last month after the intervention of Donald Trump. Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan recently expressed his gratitude towards the US President for helping them out.

Monahan, along with Public Investment Fund (PIF) Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan, dropped a major bombshell in June 2023. The two of them would sit down together and inform about a merger deal between the tour and the PIF of Saudi Arabia.

Since the announcement of the framework agreement in 2023, there has been no major progress in this deal. Last month, Monahan along with player directors Tiger Woods and Adam Scott met Trump at the White House in Washington to speak on this deal.

Following his intervention, the talks have sped up a little bit. Speaking in an interview with Golfweek, Monahan has once again expressed his gratitude towards Trump.

Well, the President has a clear passion for the game and publicly stated that he wants golf to be reunified. He talked about the need to come under one tour with all the best players in the world playing on that one tour.

The top boss of the PGA Tour also pointed out Trump’s deal-making skills while answering why they asked for his help in closing out this deal.

Beyond being the leader of the free world, he understands deal making and he’s playing a very constructive role trying to help us get there. I’m grateful for him playing the role that he’s played.

Jay Monahan added

Before his re-election as the President, Trump had claimed that he could wrap up the merger deal in 15 minutes. He has since even played a round with Tiger Woods and spoke with him. Recently, Trump also made some jokes on this talks and claimed they are more complicated than the Russia-Ukraine peace talks.

Despite a recent meeting not going so as well as many had hoped, Trump is confident that a deal between the two will be wrapped up soon.

We’ve been at Doral in the past and we would love to return.
