The BCCI removed Indian cricketers Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from the central contracts at the start of the year. Iyer did not participate in the semi-final match of Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. On the other hand, Kishan skipped all the domestic tournaments at that period and started preparing for the IPL.
BCCI Secretary, Jay Shah has stated that due to his strict measures, these players have turned up to play Duleep Trophy. The BCCI made the rule that central contracted players have to participate in the domestic tournament when needed and not neglect them.
If you look Duleep Trophy squad, apart from Rohit and Virat, rest are going to play. It's because of the harsh steps I have taken, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are playing Duleep Trophy.Jay Shah told the Times Of India
Shah explained that the board has adopted a stricter approach regarding player injuries. He shared an example involving Ravindra Jadeja. He was advised to play in domestic matches to prove his fitness after an injury.
Shah made it clear that moving forward, any player who gets injured and then recovers will need to demonstrate their fitness through domestic cricket before being considered for the Indian team. This new policy aims to ensure that players are fully fit and in form before returning to the national squad.
Jay Shah asked fans to not force Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to play the Duleep Trophy
There were reports that after the 2-0 loss against Sri Lanka in the ODI series, captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be part of the Duleep Trophy squad. However, when the squad was released, majority of the central contracted players are part of it except Sharma and Kohli.
Shah stated that Kohli and Sharma should not be forced to play in the Duleep Trophy to manage their workload and save them from suffering injury. He added that both of these players have served in Indian cricket for a long time and hence they should be respected.
Sharma was sensational with the bat yet again during the ODI series against Sri Lanka. However, Kohli struggled against the spinners in all the three ODIs. Both of them have announced their retirement from T20I cricket after the win in the T20 World Cup 2024. They will be back during the Test series against Bangladesh.
