Terry McLaurin was among Jayden Daniels’ most targeted players last year. McLaurin recorded his fifth consecutive 1000-yard season, while Daniels was chosen as the Offensive Rookie of the Year.

The Washington Commanders reached the NFC title game for the first time in decades and were projected to repeat the run once again in 2025. However, the NFC East franchise found itself in a sticky situation when McLaurin refused to attend practice.

McLaurin played out his three-year contract, which he signed in 2022, and demanded another extension. It took the Commanders the entire preseason to bring the former third-round pick to the negotiating table.

Eventually, McLaurin agreed to sign a three-year contract extension worth $96 million with $44.65 million guaranteed. Daniels approached McLaurin in the gym to congratulate him on the new deal and asked for a present.

Just a watch or something… Yeah, just a little watch or something.

Jayden Daniels said during an exclusive interview with Amazon Prime

The second-year shot caller praised the veteran receiver for his work ethic and the fear he invokes in the opposition.

We got Terry out there to help keep defensive coordinators up at night a little bit more. So, it’s good to have him back out there.

Daniels said.

The respect is mutual. Even though Daniels is far younger than him, McLaurin appreciated his support during a difficult period in his career.

Never let me forget I’m worth everything I get. Never let me forget my place was there when I got back out there… I really do appreciate him.

It’s exciting times for the Commanders fans.

NBA legend hypes up the Commanders following McLaurin’s contract extension

Despite their contributions to the team, it’s always difficult to keep every player happy. The Dallas Cowboys know a thing or two about that conundrum.

Washington faced the same with McLaurin. He harbored no desire to leave the team, but the circumstances were heading toward a point of no return.

Several NFL teams dialed the Commanders, offering them a king’s ransom in exchange for McLaurin’s services. For the longest time, the New England Patriots seemed destined to land the Pro Bowler to bolster their offense.

While the talks raged on behind the curtains, the Commanders’ minority owner and NBA legend Magic Johnson urged general manager Adam Peters to sign McLaurin quickly.

I don’t know Terry very well, but from afar, man, the guy has been nothing but consistent for that organization. He’s been a staple there in Washington his whole career. And you know, he plays his role, plays it well. He steps up in big games. And I love watching the kid, because he’s always making plays.

Magic Johnson said on the Up and Adams Show (ht/Sports Illustrated)

On Monday, after McLaurin finally made his stay in the nation’s capital official, Johnson posted a tweet to congratulate both parties for ending the standoff.

I’m thrilled that we resigned Terry McLaurin! Job well done by my partner Josh Harris and GM Adam Peters. This is great news for Commander players, our organization and all Commander fans! Terry is more than just a great football player, he is an outstanding leader and does tremendous things in the DMV community.

Johnson tweeted

Now the Commanders should turn their focus to their season’s opening fixture against rivals, the New York Giants. BetMGM’s latest odds point to an easy victory for the Commanders (+7, -115).

These two NFC East foes have played each other 186 times (including the playoffs). The blue side of New York holds an edge over the Washington franchise with a 108-73 record. However, the Commanders won both fixtures in 2024.
