When it comes to speaking out about their core beliefs, NBA players don’t always talk the talk. Even though they come from impoverished backgrounds and suffered from systemic discrimination in many cases, NBA players from the inner cities in the past and in the present have hesitated to be too political and mess with their earnings. 2024 NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown is certainly not one of those guys.
Jaylen Brown and Kyrie Irving – another ‘woke’ but good-hearted NBA star, have been some of the voices that haven’t sat quietly about what the IDF and the Israeli government, supported by the USA and UK military aid, have been doing in Gaza over the past 21 months. The attack by Hamas on October 7 was widely condemned by NBA owners, media and even LeBron James, but Israel’s actions have gone unchecked.
However, the Israeli government has been disregarding all manners of international martial laws and stooping to new lows of late, even by their recent lowly standards. The IDF is now preventing Gazans from accessing food brought by UN aid workers, opening fire on nearly 60 different occasions over the past three months at the food distribution lines and killing innocent Gaza civilians under the pretext of stopping Hamas.
The starving Palestinians have become increasingly desperate even as over 42,000 children have been confirmed to be murdered by Israeli forces in this duration. Their infants and young kids are facing extreme starvation, and images posted by Palestinians in Gaza show gut-wrenching pictures of the young ones looking like mere skeletons in the absence of food and nutrition despite UN aid being sent in abundance.
It is clear that Netanyahu and the Israeli government are looking to impose a one-state solution by force and will eventually force all Palestinians to either evacuate from the Gaza strip or die. Being a principled man in a position of power, Jaylen Brown has so far been cryptic in calling out the Israeli government’s actions. But in his latest tweet, even though there is no mention of Israel, everyone understood the subtext as he said:
When are we going to do something about what is happening right in front of us we all should be ashamed

NBA Fans react to Jaylen Brown for his cryptic callout of the Israeli government
Jaylen Brown is a man who has always walked the walk after talking the talk. He is also unafraid of the vitriol he may face for his outspoken words, always choosing to speak his truth and live by his stances. However, his vague words about Israel’s genocide are not welcome to all parties, even though he gets a lot of credit for at least alluding to it.

Some people believe that Jaylen Brown should say ‘Free Palestine’ with his chest instead of these vague words.
Is this the bravest an American celebrity can be almost two years into the genocide? Say what you really mean, Jaylen. https://t.co/1MiNEWx8LS

it’s hard to do anything when countries, such as the United States of America are funding the genocide.

All we can do is fundraise and provide awareness. https://t.co/NuXvaWNS4N
Some approved of his speaking up, even if cryptically.

An NBA player from Boston Celtics the most racist fan base in the entire history of any sport is speaking about Palestine and I am supposed to believe Salah can't say a word. https://t.co/jwgDbFX48w

The general sentiment on it, however, is NBA players need to take a bigger stance on the genocide.

It is important to note that many of the billionaire owners of NBA teams are Jews, and by extension, Israel sympathizers who support the Zionist cause. The likes of the Adelson family, Micky Arison and other powerful American political families have thrown their weight behind Netanyahu and have muzzled NBA voices that would otherwise speak up against the atrocities and inhuman actions of the IDF in the Gaza Strip.
