When Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles during the 2025 NBA playoffs, many thought he would miss the 2025-26 season, leaving the onus on teammate Jaylen Brown to lead the Boston Celtics.

The franchise did not waste time and sent Tatum for surgery immediately. Since then, he has been recovering as per what his doctors prescribed, and has been making good progress.

The usual timetable for recovery is a year, and going by that schedule, it looked unlikely that he would even suit up for the upcoming season. At least that is what Tyrese Haliburton and Damian Lillard would do, who both suffered similar injuries during the playoffs.

However, the NBA champion has revealed that he has surprised doctors and is on pace to return earlier than expected. He openly claimed that he has not shut the door on the 2025-26 campaign.

Injuries from the past is no longer career threatening. You can recover from anything, as long as you put the work in, you got a good diet, you do what you gotta do. Shoutout to JT. JT is a superhuman. He’s on some Wolverine run.

Jaylen Brown said on a live stream

Jaylen Brown had nothing but praise for his teammate after learning about his recovery. He believes his Celtics star is on a path similar to the fictional character Wolverine, who emerged from adversity to become a stronger version of himself.

Even though it was just a phrase to compare Jayson Tatum‘s recovery, Brown did make a point that thanks to the developments in medical science, his teammate can rebound and have a stellar career.

Jaylen Brown stunned at Jayson Tatum’s pace of recovery

When Jayson Tatum appeared on First Take, he revealed that he was in the rehab facilities for 6 days a week. Host of the show Stephen A. Smith advised him not to rush things and take it easy, to which he agreed.

Any athlete looking to play in to their late 30s knows they have to take care of their body. The forward is mindful of that, and is still on pace to make a fast return to the court.

We’ll see when JT will come back. JT looked great though, I’m not gonna lie. I’ve never seen anybody recover so fast from an Achilles injury. JT been going crazy. Anybody with a drive and a work ethic and a passion for the game, I’m not surprised.

Jaylen Brown said on Twitch

After Jaylen Brown said this, his co-host of the live stream expressed concerns that Tatum was too fast with his recovery, and probably needed to slow down.

That may be a concern which others also share, as it is not natural to recover the way the 4-time All-NBA 1st-teamer has been able to do so far. He is targeting a return at some point later in the season.

Jaylen Brown fought through meniscus tear in knee during playoffs

Before Jayson Tatum went down after tearing his Achilles tendon, there were concerns the Boston Celtics were not in their championship-winning form. One of the reasons was the lackluster play from Jaylen Brown, which later was attributed to a knee injury.

I had the option either to get surgery right away or kinda just manage it, get through the season, and get through the playoffs. It happened too late into the season that I didn’t have a choice. ‘Cause like I’m not going to miss the playoffs for nothing. So, we grinded through it.’

Jaylen Brown told The Sporting News

This revelation to Itiel Estudillo points to the fact that the 2024 Finals MVP decided to play through injury instead of throwing in the towel and getting surgery. He finally did get it fixed after their season ended, and is on pace to return healthy.
