No one expected anything major from the Boston Celtics this season, but star player Jaylen Brown had other plans. After Jayson Tatum suffered an Achilles injury that ruled him out for the entire season, the Celtics management decided to trade Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday to free up their salary cap, and break up their 2024 NBA championship winning roster.
Without their primary scorer and other important players traded away, it felt like this season would be more of a learning curve for the newer members of the squad and quite possibly a lottery pick in the offseason. But Jaylen Brown has stepped up and carried the offensive burden as the Celtics find themselves at sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 12-9 record.
Brown has played all the 21 games this season and is currently averaging 29 points, 6 rebounds and 4.8 assists. The former number three pick in the 2016 NBA Draft has scored 30 or more points in four out of his last five games, including two 40-point games.
While Brown has mostly been the second offensive option since Tatum got drafted in 2017, he achieved a career scoring milestone during their win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday.
The 29-year-old has crossed 12,000-point mark in the regular season, making him the 14th Celtics player to reach the milestone. After surpassing the milestone, Brown spoke about how crazy is LeBron James‘ scoring record of 42,000 points.
On Sunday night, I passed 12,000 career points and I was thinking about it, sitting there, I was like how the f*** does LeBron got 42,000 bro. What the…
Jaylen Brown said on his stream
“On Sunday I passed 12,000 career points… And I was sitting there thinking about it, how the fuck does LeBron got 42,000.” 😭

At this point, it is nearly impossible for anyone to break James’ all-time points record as the four-time champion continues to add to his total in a record-breaking 23rd season in the NBA. If anyone does come close, it would be another GOAT candidate in the sport who can probably break this record.
Jayson Tatum on his relationship with Jaylen Brown
The two Boston Celtics stars have been together since 2017, when Tatum was drafted into the league. The duo have gone on to form one of the best offensive partnerships in the league. They have taken the Celtics to two NBA Finals, winning it in 2024 and helping the franchise win their first championship in 16 years.

During their time in Boston, Tatum has primarily been the number one option and the face of the franchise. There were talks of trading Brown back in 2023, but it all worked out in the end. Because at the end of the day, it was Brown who won the Eastern Conference Finals MVP as well as the Finals MVP.
Having played their whole careers on the same team, the two have developed a strong relationship over the years. Tatum spoke about how he felt when Brown lifted the Finals MVP when they won the championship on The Morris Code podcast.
I was just so excited in that moment that we won a championship. I can be 100% honest, there was no animosity, I wasn’t upset. To be honest, I was just like, ‘Oh s***, it’s not my time’. I know I’m going to get a Finals MVP, so that just means I gotta win another championship.
Jayson Tatum said on The Morris Cole Podcast
Tatum will return for the 2026-27 campaign, and seems to be progressing well after the devastating injury. It will be interesting to see if he is able to pick up from where he left off and help the Celtics win another title.
Jaylen Brown is embracing his new role as the main man
The Celtics star is in an unfamiliar position this season. The team are unlikely to contend for a championship without their best player. But Brown has grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Following the 123-117 win over the New York Knicks, Brown discussed about his evolution in the game this season in the press conference.
To be honest, every game I take information and apply it to the next game. Obviously, this year I have more responsibility so this year I’m in a new position so I’m still figuring it out. Learning when to be aggressive, learning when to get off the ball is all stuff I’m still getting better at every game.
Jaylen Brown said after the Knicks game
“I’m still growing, to be honest.”

Brown has shown his evolution as he is averaging his career-best in points (29) and assists (4.8) per game this season. A deep run in the playoffs would instantly become a successful season for the Celtics without Tatum. As such, next season with Tatum and Brown back together would massively help the team achieve another championship.
