Jaylen Brown ‘loves’ Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s decision to represent himself amidst recent player power talk

Jaylen Brown is a fan of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's representation

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has steadily established himself as one of the most dominant forces in the NBA today, but his recent decision was quite the surprise. The Oklahoma City Thunder star chose to part ways with his agent, Thad Foucher of the Wasserman Group. This decision caught the eye of Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown, who seemed to be a fan of the move.

Gilgeous-Alexander parted ways with the Wasserman Group ahead of a summer where he will be in line to sign a nearly $300 million, 4-year supermax contract extension. Instead, SGA will opt to represent himself on his own according to NBA Insider Chris Haynes. Brown, who signed his own supermax extension just a couple of years ago, responded to this news by declaring that he ‘loves’ the decision.

Jaylen Brown tweeted in response

The reigning NBA Finals MVP and champion, who has been vocal about player empowerment throughout his career, publicly backed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s decision on social media. His reaction aligns with his long-standing stance on athletes taking control of their careers, though he continues to be represented by Jason Glushon of Glushon Sports Management.

In 2023, the Celtics star signed a then-record-breaking five-year, $304 million supermax extension. Notably, Jaylen Brown is also the Vice President of the NBPA and has pushed for policies that empower players across the NBA. He has been one of the championing leaders of the ongoing player empowerment movement in the NBA, which has allowed players to earn significantly greater contracts ahead of the NBA’s highly lucrative upcoming TV Deal.

Jaylen Brown shows respect despite previous rivalry with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Despite his public support for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jaylen Brown may not have always had rose tinted glasses for the Thunder star. After their on-court battle last month, which saw OKC hand the reigning champion Celtics a rare defeat, Gilgeous-Alexander seemingly took shots at Brown for his performance in the caption of his Instagram post.

“Scratching things off my bucket list, I can’t go back and forth with somebody that’s bucket-less,” SGA wrote in the caption of his post.

The Thunder won the game on the back of a dominant second-half performance that saw them erase a 15-point halftime deficit. The turning point? Brown, who had scored 21 points in the first half, went completely scoreless in the second half, going 0-for-7 from the field as he struggled against OKC’s defensive schemes.

The wordplay in SGA’s post was hard to ignore. Given that Brown failed to score a single bucket in the second half, the caption by the MVP frontrunner led to speculation that the caption was a subtle jab at the Celtics star. Despite these perceived shots towards him, Jaylen Brown seems to be cool with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander after his support for SGA’s latest move.
