Jaylen Brown signs off on Thunder star’s suggestion to award two DPOYs
The NBA usually awards the Defensive Player of the Year trophy to centers and power forwards leading the league in blocks.
Jaylen Brown agrees with two DPOY award suggestion from Jalen Williams
In the last ten seasons, the NBA has selected a big man as the Defensive Player of the Year seven times. They usually lead the league in blocks and sometimes in steals, while also affecting the opposition’s shot selection. However, the DPOY award has faced some criticism off late.
When looking at the history of the award, perimeter players have won it just ten times. That too, five of those wins were in the first six years of the league. The ratio changes if one excludes them as then, it has gone to big men thirty-one times compared to the five that went to perimeter players.
The emphasis on blocks and rebounds have seen the likes of former winner Draymond Green call out the league. His pointed out that last season, he felt Victor Wembanyama affected the game in a way eventual DPOY winner Rudy Gobert did not. To this notion, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jalen Williams gave his two cents.
"I think there should be two Defensive Player of the Year's… it's just a big every year" — Jalen Williams has got a lot to say about the current NBA rules…NEW YM3 DROPS TOMORROW! 🚨 pic.twitter.com/6BnkVyNZsv

The 23-year-old added while on The Young Man and the Three that a big man does not have to chase a pin-down, at the same time a guard does not have to defend the rim. Therefore, to solely give it to rim protectors does not justify the logic behind what constitutes elite defensive play.
Jaylen Brown chimes in on Jalen Williams’ DPOY idea
Jalen Williams opinionated that the NBA should create two DPOY awards. One for bigs and one for guards. That way, the guards do not have to feel left out even if they are one of the best in that department. One player who passionately plays defense is Jaylen Brown. When he saw this clip, he replied to it.
The single word reply indicates he agrees with Williams’ words. Being one of the better perimeter defenders in the game, he never finds his way in the DPOY conversation. So don’t many other elite perimeter defenders such as Atlanta Hawks star Dyson Daniels, who leads the NBA in steals.

Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis has also complained that his overall defensive capabilities does not seem to impress voters who solely focus on blocks. With defensive skills improving along with athleticism, the NBA could rethink the voting mechanism.
