It was a frustrating game for Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics on Saturday night. The Celtics have been on a good run since December, but suffered a narrow 100-95 loss to the San Antonio Spurs at the TD Garden in Boston. Brown played some heavy minutes as he clocked nearly 43 minutes and recorded 27 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists.
Saturday’s match was the Celtics’ seventh loss in 19 games at home this season. The loss dropped them to 24-14 and to third place in the Eastern Conference standings, tied with the New York Knicks, who are in second. The win propelled the Spurs to second place in a highly stacked Western Conference standings with a 27-11 record.
Jaylen Brown is well known for not mincing his words and is a vocal personality. He was in the headlines for his comments on flopping to win the MVP award on his stream before. Last week, the former Finals MVP was visibly upset about losing out on the Eastern Conference Player of the Month award to Jalen Brunson for the month of December despite collecting the Eastern Conference Player of the Week honours twice in the same month.
Free throws are an integral part of the game. And on Saturday, there was a clear difference between the two sides. The Spurs had 20 free throw attempts, while the Celtics, unfortunately, found no luck on that aspect of the game, as they had just four free throw attempts for the entire match. Following the loss, Brown was livid at the officiating and did not hold back with his comments.
I feel like they (San Antonio Spurs) got away with a lot. I’m tired of the inconsistency. I’ll accept the fine at this point. I thought it was some bullshit tonight. They’re a good defensive team, but they ain’t that damn good…I hope somebody can just pull up the clips, because it’s the same shit every time we play a good team. It’s like they refuse to make a call, then they call touch fouls on the other end, and that’s just extremely frustrating, bro.

The NBA has faced a lot of criticism regarding officiating over the last few years. While it is common for referees to miss a foul, the main issue is with the lack of consistency in their calls, which ends up frustrating a lot of players, including the fans of the game.
Jaylen Brown makes his feelings known on social media
After the loss, the Celtics have now gone 0-3 against the top-four teams in the Western Conference. On paper, the difference in free-throw attempts appears to be one of the main reasons for their five-point loss. Brown completed the match with no trips to the line.
This is not the first time that Brown has made his feelings known in public. His comments on the officiating may receive some backlash from the NBA and may result in him getting fined but the Celtics star does not seem to be bothered about it. After his rant in the post-match interview, he took to his social media once again. He posted:
Fine me I’m sick of this sh**.
Fine me I’m sick of this shit

This may not be the last time that Brown criticizes the officials in public. It will most definitely happen again in the future. But it is good to see players questioning the referees for their controversial calls and no calls because, at the end of the day, they are never held accountable.
Jaylen Brown in the MVP conversation
The Celtics have been one of the biggest surprises of the 2025-26 campaign. With Jayson Tatum ruled out with a long-term injury and with the trades of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, the Celtics have broken up their 2024 NBA Championship-winning roster. Hence, many predicted that the Celtics would at best be a play-in team this season. But that has not been the case.

With the primary scorer of the team ruled out, Brown has not just kept the Celtics competitive this season; his performances have turned them into one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Nearly halfway through the 2025-26 season, the Celtics have a strong chance of securing a direct playoff berth, as they will most likely finish in the top six of the standings.
Considering his recent performances, Brown has cemented himself as one of the best, if not the best, two-way players in the NBA. He has been so impressive that he has put his name into the MVP conversation and is a top-three contender for the award as things stand.
The 29-year-old is currently averaging 29.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and five assists. While Brown is having a career year, all eyes will be on Tatum as there have been reports suggesting that the forward is eyeing a return at the end of the season.
