Thursday night saw the Boston Celtics led by Jaylen Brown take on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder. In a closely fought match, the Thunder came out on top and registered a 104-102 victory over the Celtics at the Paycom Center. The result of the clash has now put SGA as a strong frontrunner for the MVP award.
The win extended the Thunder’s winning streak to seven games as they sit at the top of the Western Conference standings with a 52-15 record and are now 3.5 games ahead of the San Antonio Spurs. Meanwhile, the Celtics have lost back-to-back games to the Spurs and the Thunder. Their record dropped to 43-23 as they find themselves at second place in the Eastern Conference standings.
After a historic 2024-25 campaign where he won the championship, Finals MVP, regular-season MVP, and the scoring title, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is on course to win it all once again. Over the last three seasons, SGA has averaged 30+ points per game and is on track to make it four in a row this season. He is second in the league in scoring and is currently averaging 31.8 points per game.
Many pundits and analysts believe his scoring numbers and efficiency put him in the same tier as Michael Jordan. He was coined as the ‘Michael Jordan of modern NBA‘ by former Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce.
While there is no doubt that OKC are the best team in the league at the moment, they have been accused of having foul calls go in their favor more often than not. SGA is one of the few top scorers in the league that does not rely much on the three-point shot. The star player relies more on the mid-range and often draws free throws. However, his style of play has drawn criticism from fans, opposing players and coaches.
Jaylen Brown is well known for speaking his mind during his live streaming sessions. Being an avid streamer, the Celtics forward did not shy away from criticizing the NBA when he lost the NBA POTM award to Jalen Brunson earlier this season, and not so long ago, he pointed out that one needs to learn ‘flopping’ to be in the MVP conversations during a live stream.
On Thursday night during the third quarter, SGA drove into the lane and was sent to the free throw line for a foul. After the whistle, Brown yelled, “That’s not basketball.”

Jaylen Brown is second in the league in free throw attempts this season with 9.3 per game and is behind only Luka Doncic, who leads the NBA in scoring.
NBA fans react to Jaylen Brown calling out the official after a foul on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Shai Gilgeous Alexander scored a game-high 35 points to go along with six rebounds and nine assists. In addition to the victory, SGA overtook Wilt Chamberlain‘s NBA record for consecutive games (127) with at least 20 points. The reigning MVP and scoring champion last scored fewer than 20 points in a regular-season game on Oct. 30, 2024, when he had 18 in a 105-93 home win against the San Antonio Spurs.
Brown’s reaction to the foul was quick to go viral and fans did not waste any time in reacting to it across social media.

Ironically, SGA shot eight free throws while Brown shot 14 free throws on Thursday. Hence, majority of the fans were seen calling out the former Finals MVP for some foul-baiting of his own.
Jaylen Brown considered leaving the Boston Celtics in 2019
Drafted by the Celtics as the third pick in the 2016 NBA draft, Jaylen Brown has grown into one of the best two-way players in the league today. He is having a career-high season this year and is a candidate for the MVP award. However, it was not all smooth sailing for the Celtics star in Boston.

Speaking on the Cousins Podcast with Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady, Brown explained how close he came to leaving Boston before receiving crucial advice from McGrady that ultimately changed his perspective.
He told me the potential that I have and what I needed to do if I needed to make it work. And I followed that instruction to a T. And fast forward, I became an NBA champion. I remember sitting down with Mac. We spent a couple of days just working out and talking, having some food. And he’s telling me, I’m thinking one thing, and he’s thinking like, nah, you need to stay. He’s telling me all the stuff that all just manifested itself. It’s crazy looking back on it now.

It worked out for Brown and Boston in the end as they have made it to two NBA Finals since. While they came up short in 2022 against the Golden State Warriors, Brown played an instrumental role and was named as the Finals MVP in 2024 when they beat the Dallas Mavericks in five games.
