On Father’s Day, the Celtics players, some of whom are fathers, were attending practice instead of spending time with their families ahead of a crucial Game 5. Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum and his teammates were interviewed on the occasion and asked their thoughts on embracing aftherhood.

A few players complained about not being able to spend Father’s Day with their children since they had practice. Al Horford mentioned that after practice, he couldn’t wait to go home and spend time with his family. Jayson Tatum, meanwhile, thought back on his experience of becoming a father. He revealed that initially he wasn’t very excited or thrilled to learn he was going to be a father.

When I found out that I was going to be a dad, I was still in college. I had like a week or two left. I wasn’t ecstatic...I’d be the first to say I wasn’t like super thrilled to find out I was going to be a dad, and quickly realized that it was like the best thing that ever could have happened to me. There’s nothing better than being a dad.

Jayson Tatum is grateful to his dad for introducing him to basketball

Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics is one of the best players on his team right now. Much of the credit for Tatum’s success goes to his dad, Justin Tatum. Jayson Tatum shared his views on how his dad introduced him to basketball and admitted that he is grateful to his dad during an interview on the Graham Bensinger Show.

This was the person (his dad) that introduced me to basketball like he has as much to do with anything as to why I'm here (playing for Celtics). My competitive point as to pushing me you know to be the best player I could be. Never one of my parents were soft or took it easy on me.

During his younger days on the basketball court, Tatum’s father’s strict tutoring occasionally crossed into abuse. Tatum acknowledges that his father’s actions caused him some hardship, but he also believes that growing up with his father’s tough approach helped toughen him as an NBA player.
