Colin Cowherd downplays Jayson Tatum’s greatness by asserting he’ll struggle to even make it to all-time Celtics second team

Colin Cowherd feels Jayson Tatum will struggle to make Boston Celtics all-time second team, needs NBA titles to change narrative

Jayson Tatum has been the most consistent superstar of the Boston Celtics over the past few years. Having led the team to seven straight playoffs, there are voices suggesting Tatum is one of the all-time greats of the franchise. However, Colin Cowherd seems to differ.

While speaking on The Herd, Colin Cowherd talked about where Tatum ranks among the all-time Boston Celtics greats.

Everybody knows Jayson Tatum is really good. So, Jayson Tatum's never won an MVP and has no titles. 5 All-Star games would rank him for 13th most in Celtics history. The standards are different. Right now, he maybe the 5th best forward in Celtics history. For a lot of franchises, he's their 1st or 2nd or 3rd best player ever. I'm not sure he makes the All-Time Celtics second team.

Cowherd did mention that Tatum is very good as a basketball player. But considering the standards the Boston Celtics have set for so long, he might not be good enough.

He is stacked against the likes of Bill Russell and Larry Bird. Superstars who have actually made the Boston Celtics one of the two most storied franchises in the league. Cowherd believes Tatum will have to do a lot more than his current five All-Star appearances.

Only if Jayson Tatum wins at least one NBA title and a regular season MVP award, will he be even considered to be a part of that debate. Until then, his legacy will be known as a great player. But overshadowed by the past.

Jayson Tatum could cement his legacy with NBA title(s)

Colin Cowherd did mention that even though Tatum is a veteran in the league, he still has time to make his name. To start with, he will have to lead his team to at least one NBA title. Even though his Boston Celtics feature 5 All-Star caliber players, if Jayson Tatum leads the charge, it will be enough to push him up the Celtics greatness ladder.

Which means winning the NBA Finals MVP too. Add another title, and he could stake a claim as one of the best ever. But even then, he has to lead the charge. If any of his other teammates win, take the lead, his reputation will be tarnished. When Jaylen Brown won the Eastern Conference Finals MVP, he was happy for his teammate.

However, he has to take on that role in the NBA Finals that start on June 6th. Jayson Tatum could well be on his way to cement himself as one of the greats in Boston Celtics history.
