Popular TV personality and sports journalist Stephen A. Smith has once again put himself in the MLB spotlight after a massive blunder regarding the New York Yankees fact. The incident took place during his discussion with former MLB player Chris Russo on ‘First Take’ on Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge.
The argument was about who was having a better season between the two MLB stars when Smith butchered facts on live television. The ESPN presenter argued that Aaron Judge has Juan Soto protecting the lineup which resulted in the outfielder’s outstanding season.
Smith seemed to have flipped the facts, as Soto starts in front of Judge, not the other way around. While his argument on Soto getting protected by Judge in behind might have still sounded correct, he failed to recheck his facts prior to coming live.
But you do got Juan Soto batting behind you. They can’t get around you a little bit. They gotta pitch to the brother, you understand what I’m saying, because you’ve got Soto waiting in the wings. So, all of those things facilitate Aaron Judge being who he is.Stephen A. Smith on X.

While Smith did not challenge Judge’s extraordinary 2024 season records, he did say that Soto’s presence boosted his performance further. Chris Russo seemed to have caught on the mistake on set but did not correct Smith and just smiled silently.
Fans blast Stephen A. Smith on facts on Yankees lineup error
However, fans were not so kind as to let go of this matter and roasted the radio host. Even Jazz Chisholm Jr. who recently joined the pinstripes took to X, commenting, “Ohtani also has 2 MVPs behind him so that’s irrelevant sir!!”.
Factually it’s correct, as Judge was also having a mindblowing season without Soto in the lineup. One fan commented, “…that kind of mistake is disqualifying as it demonstrates he doesn’t know what the fuck he’s talking about.” While another questioned, “Has he not watched a game this season…” Check out more reactions below:

Has he not watched a game this season…. Soto hits before Judge

Soto hitting behind Judge ??
Just a loud mouth who doesn’t know ball

Even if Soto was hitting behind Judge, is he aware of who hits after Ohtani?
Heard Betts and Freeman are decent ball players
Yes he did and his colleagues did not correct him … that kind of mistake is disqualifying as it demonstrates he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about …………….. piss poor

Dude consistently proves he knows next to nothing about the sport of baseball. Judge hits behind Soto.

This part of the year they should switch in the lineup though. He needs that protection the same way he needed it at the start of the year.
What an awful take. Even if Soto did bat behind Judge, which he doesn't, the on-deck hitter has zero impact on the batter at the plate.

he'll make a correction tomorrow and say he meant bernie williams…

We’ve seen the way you throw. Stop talking ball ?

Throughout the 2024 season, Yankees manager Aaron Boone placed Juan Soto 2nd in all his 130 starts, while Aaron Judge hit third in all his 132 starts. Furthermore, Soto has never been “waiting in the wings” behind Judge in any of the games so far.
