WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield aka JBL was considered one of the greatest heels of the Ruthless Aggression era. However, his heelish actions once landed him in big trouble when he traveled to El Paso. JBL shared the incident in an interview regarding the late Eddie Guerrero and his mother.

The 57-year-old legend took to social media and gave a backstory of what actually happened that night. On May 3rd, 2004, WWE held a show in Eddie Guerrero‘s hometown, El Paso. While Guerrero was addressing the WWE Universe, JBL sneaked in and brutally attacked him in front of his mother. During a verbal altercation with JBL, Guerrero’s mother suddenly fell to the ground and suffered a heart attack.

The interesting thing was that, although it was just supposed to be a storyline, she did suffer a legitimate heart attack. JBL stated that the El Paso crowd would have killed him if he had stayed there for the night. However, he was escorted out of town by the police and flew out of Texas. He said that it was Chavo Sr. and Eddie’s idea to go along with this storyline. The Hall of Famer further stated that this segment changed his career forever.

The police gave me an escort out of town and told me to drive to Odessa, Texas, and fly out from there. They told me they thought I would be killed if I stayed in El Paso. I had to leave so fast to prevent a riot I was driving in my wrestling gear. Chavo Sr and Eddie’s idea to do this sold out the Staples Center off this storyline. When this video aired, everything changed-JBL had heat like few have had. I owe everything to Eddie and the Guerrero family. Viva la Raza

Bradshaw ended this rivalry on a high note as he became the WWE Champion at The Great American Bash in 2004. The veteran stayed champion for nearly one year after finally losing the title to John Cena at WrestleMania 21. He recently returned to the company for the 2024 WWE Draft to announce some of the picks on behalf of Raw and SmackDown.

JBL revealed he often got jumped by angry fans after that storyline

The 57-year-old shared all the interesting stories regarding the infamous segment during his rivalry with The Latino Heat. He revealed an incident when a fan tried to attack him from behind on the first show after the video aired.

In another one of his posts, JBL revealed how an angry fan pounced on him as he entered the ring. He recalled it was the very first show after the video of the segment between him and Eddie’s mother aired. However, the match referee, Brian Hebner, stopped the fan from getting to him.

The first show after this video aired. A fan tried to jump me from behind as soon as I got to the ring. @babyhebner turned punter Pat McAfee and kicked the guy’s head off his shoulders to stop the guy getting to me. We had to have extra security. Eddie would just laugh and say “you got good heat Ese”
