Ryan Day, Jeremiah Smith, Jack Swayer, Will Howard, and the Ohio State Buckeyes football team visited the White House to meet President Donald Trump. However, the trip would be remembered mostly because of Vice President JD Vance fumbling the CFP Championship Trophy.

The 2024 Buckeyes team reclaimed their best college football title after beating Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff final. As an annual tradition, the winning team received an invitation from the White House.

On Monday, April 14th, the OSU team, along with President Trump and VP JD Vance, stood on the podium. Vance went to pick up the CFP Championship Trophy. However, he accidentally fumbled it.

It’s easy to misunderstand at first glance that the CFP trophy split into two halves when Vance tried to pick it up; however, that’s not entirely true. The CFP trophy is divided into two parts. One is the top half (the main trophy), and the other is the stand to place the trophy itself.

Nevertheless, it was a moment that will be talked about for quite some time. Especially because JD Vance is an Ohio State graduate.

I’m proud of you guys. You guys were resilient. You were tough. You represented the state of Ohio well. You represented the whole country well.

JD Vance congratulated the Buckeyes team for winning their 9th College Football Championship

The Buckeyes aren’t the first sports team to visit the White House this year. The Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers visited the White House on February 3 and last week, the 2024 World Series Champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, paid a visit as well.

Donald Trump praised wide receiver Jeremiah Smith before JD Vance’s fumble

The 2024 Buckeyes were loaded with talent at every position, but none made more headlines than 19-year-old Jeremiah Smith. Donald Trump kept an eye on the freshman throughout the year and understands his potential.

I shouldn’t say this, but the coach was giving Jeremiah [Smith] some major praise backstage… I said, ‘What’s the future?’ and they said, ‘We have a guy, he may be the best ever. [And I think] Jeremiah was the only freshman that was at a level that few people have ever seen before, according to what I hear. Nobody could stop him all year long, even as a freshman.

The 6-foot-1 rookie made waves every time he stepped onto the field. Smith caught 76 passes for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns (1 rushing touchdown), averaging 17.3 yards per catch. He was only behind Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter in touchdowns.

Smith was exceptional in the CFP Championship final. He caught 5 passes for 88 yards and 1 touchdown.

Running back Quinshon Judkins contributed 2 rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown. Judkins is among the top running back prospects in the 2025 NFL Draft alongside Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty and North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton.

Smith still has a couple of years in his hands before thinking about the draft. However, some scouts believe he was so good in his first season of college football that he could make the switch to the NFL after just one year.

Smith’s teammate Emeka Egbuka is in this year’s draft. Egbuka played four seasons for the Buckeyes and accumulated 205 receptions for 2868 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Another name to keep an eye on is the Buckeye’s pass rusher, Jack Sawyer. Sawyer was a standout for Ohio State. During his final year with the Buckeyes, Sawyer logged 59 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 9 sacks, 9 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles, 1 interception, and 2 touchdowns. As per reports, Sawyer is projected to be a second-round pick in this year’s stacked defensive end lineup.
