Jeff Hardy is one of the most popular WWE superstars of all time. Becoming a world champion is a huge feat on its own, and he has done so thrice. However, the 47-year-old feels that he has never reached his potential and could have been a much bigger superstar than he ended up becoming.
In an interview with WFAA, Hardy expressed regret about how he was living his life in his 20s and 30s, likely referring to his drug use. If he was living then how he lives now, he believes he could have been a bigger professional wrestler than John Cena. Hardy felt that he was born to become a professional wrestler and had a natural knack for it.
Jeff Hardy has notoriously had a long history of alcohol and drug abuse. This has even been brought up many times in his storylines. He once showed up inebriated at a TNA PPV, where he was supposed to face Sting during the main event. Furthermore, these issues have also gotten him involved in controversy no matter which company he wrestled for.
Jeff Hardy believes that if he was living life differently in his 20s & 30s, he could have been bigger than John Cena:

Regardless, Hardy’s incredible popularity a few years ago cannot be denied. He was on top of the world during his WWE Championship reign in 2008-09. In fact, many even called him the most popular man in America after Barack Obama. Unfortunately for him, he was never able to achieve the face-of-the-company status he believed he could have.
Wrestling veteran Bill Apter comments on the prospect of Jeff Hardy retiring CM Punk
A few weeks ago, Jeff Hardy revealed what he wanted to do in his future. The former WWE Champion wished to retire his archrival CM Punk and then enter into the Hall of Fame. His dream of entering the Hall of Fame isn’t unlikely, as he has been approached by WWE for an induction. However, the other idea was laughed at by fans. Regardless, Bill Apter seemed to be on board despite having reservations about the retirement stipulation.
Speaking on The Wrestling Time Machine, Apter said that he would love to see another bout between these two old rivals. However, there was no way that Hardy was ever going to retire CM Punk in WWE. To him, this bout was a fan-dream match, and that is all that it should be.
Apter did point out that WWE currently has a great working relationship with TNA. Fans have gotten to see various TNA superstars cross over and make an appearance in NXT. Furthermore, they seem to be earning quite a lot for doing so. Thus, a Punk vs. Hardy match, or at least a small interaction, is definitely a possibility. In fact, they could have a staredown as soon as the Royal Rumble.
