As the Boston Bruins welcomed the Ottawa Senators to the TD Garden on Saturday, all eyes were fixed on two goaltenders Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark. The two keepers would share an emotional hug before the game during the warmups.

In June 2024, Ullmark was traded to the Senators in exchange for Mark Kastelic, Joonas Korpisalo, and a 2024 first-round pick. During his time with the Bruins, the Swedish goaltender forged a special bond with his former teammate Swayman.

The two goalies would make a special celebration for themselves. After every win, the two of them would share a bear hug which left the fans in awe. Following Ullmark’s trade to the Senators, the fans were left distressed as they would perhaps not get a chance to see that celebration again.

As the teams began their pregame warmups, the two would chat for a moment. The goalies would then share a warm embrace (not so emphatic as their original one) and would pose for a photo together.

In a closely fought encounter, it was Ullmark and his team who came away as 3-2 winners in overtime with him making 14 saves. Swayman on the other side was the busier of the two and faced 34 shots throughout the game.

Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark reflect on the Senators’ 3-2 win against the Bruins

Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark would both comment after the game about facing each other. While Swayman would state this as a “special” game for him, Ullmark hailed his opponent as a “heck of a goaltender“.

The former Boston Bruins goaltender duo won the Jennings Trophy in the 2022-23 season. Swayman would later go on to hail Ullmark as his “mentor“.

It was a special game. We share such an incredible bond, and seeing him in another jersey is different. I’m very happy for him and the success he’s having. It’s fun to watch him succeed.

Jeremy Swayman said

While speaking with Sportsnet’ Shawn Mackenzie, Ullmark admitted being a little anxious after landing in Boston. The 31-year-old would later speak on his bond with his former teammate.

He’s a heck of a goaltender, but even better human being. So it was fun to get that kind of out of the way and then started thinking about the game… It certainly made me to who I am today. We competed every single day on and off the ice, but we always had a smile on our face. We had that little camaraderie and really it’s we kind of grow a bond that’s hard to match. 

Linus Ullmark stated

The two goalies will now turn their attention towards their team’s next matches. The Bruins with a 7-7-2 record will take on the St. Louis Blues. Meanwhile, the Sens who are 7-7-0 will face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night.
