When Bill Belichick was fired after more than two decades due to a string of losing seasons, Jerod Mayo was expected to rejuvenate the New England Patriots as their new head coach. However, much like his response to the team’s 3-7 record, Mayo deflected responsibility, instead placing the blame on his players.
The Patriots appeared completely unprepared as they faced the Dolphins, falling behind 24-0 by halftime. While they managed to score 15 points in the second half, they were ultimately outperformed in a 34-15 defeat. To make matters worse, the team was penalized 10 times during the Week 12 game, losing 75 crucial yards.
In the post-game press conference, when it came time to take accountability, the Patriots head coach shifted the entire blame for the blowout loss amid the losing season. This was the second time Mayo criticized his own players publicly.

Although it’s true Mayo cannot get on the field to execute the plays, he holds responsibility for preparing his players to make those plays. Even if the players were entirely at fault, the head coach’s open criticism of them does not project an appreciated image of the team.
Jerod Mayo criticizes players for lack of focus
In addition to criticizing his players, Mayo also fired at them in the press conference for not resonating with his words before the crucial game against the Dolphins at the Hard Rock Stadium. He had urged his players to elevate their level of focus, but they appeared uncoordinated and unprepared on the field.
Mayo later acknowledged his part in the team’s necessary improvement, admitting the change needs to start with him. The Patriots are currently one of the worst teams across the league with 81 penalties imposed on them in 12 games, demanding an urgency to be more disciplined.
