Mike McCarthy‘s clock management grows worse, Dak Prescott has forgotten how to connect with CeeDee Lamb, and the Cowboys’ defense has become Swiss cheese. To sum up the Cowboys’ Sunday venture, the Detroit Lions came to Arlington, played good football, and ruined Jerry Jones’ birthday.

The Lions had a chip on their shoulder from their reverse fixture last season. Head coach Dan Campbell made it clear that they will travel to Dallas to make a statement. And they did.

Jared Goff had a 153.75 quarterback rating by contributing three touchdowns and 315 yards. In comparison, Cowboys’ Dak Prescott threw two picks while trying to connect with Lamb and Jalen Tolbert.

Mike McCarthy’s inability to rally the Cowboys players has become apparent in the last few weeks, and after the 47-9 blowout, fans demand owner Jerry Jones fire him. Although Jones claimed that the result was a ‘shocker,’ he isn’t ready to relieve McCarthy of his duties just yet.

This was a very concerning and a very humbling [loss]. It felt bad because all of our great fans, especially the ones who were inside the stadium and the ones who are all about the Cowboys… This was a shocker. I think we could have done a lot of things better in that football game, and I think we can [but] we just did not do out there today.

Jerry Jones said after the game

The Cowboys had the 23rd-best run defense in the league prior to this game, allowing 8 touchdowns and an average of 135 yards per game. It’s a massive drop-off from last season under former defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

Jerry Jones’ most humiliating loss of Cowboys tenure

The Sunday night beatdown wasn’t just any old loss. It set multiple unwanted records for the Cowboys and Jones in particular.

As things stand, McCarthy’s men haven’t won a game at Jerry Land since they defeated the Lions in December last year. They have lost four consecutive home games, which included the dreaded wildcard loss to the Green Bay Packers.

According to Mike Leslie of WFAA Dallas, the 47-9 loss to the Lions was the worst in the 15-year history of the AT&T Stadium. Furthermore, this also became their fifth-worst loss in franchise history, but they were all before Jones’ era.

  1. Chicago Bears (1985) — 44-0
  2. at Minnesota Vikings (1970) — 54-13
  3. Cleveland Browns (1960) — 48-7
  4. Minnesota Vikings (1988) — 43-3

The Cowboys enter a bye week, which allows McCarthy to fix a few things if possible. He will remain in charge because Jones claimed he has no plans of firing him. Of course, nothing is permanent in football.
