In Short
  • Jerry Jones expresses confidence that the Dallas Cowboys can become Super Bowl contenders next season.
  • The team has made significant changes to its defense, hiring Christian Parker as the new coordinator.
  • Jones believes the Cowboys' offense and revamped defense position them as potential favorites for Super Bowl LXI.

By now, every football fan has become accustomed to Jerry Jones‘ Dallas Cowboys coming up short in their pursuit of ending their three-decade-plus Super Bowl drought.

This past season, with the way the Dak Prescott-led offense was performing, many felt the team had a chance to do the unthinkable. At the same time, there was no doubt that the defense was dragging them. After fixing the unit, some fans and analysts seemed to agree with Jones’ belief that America’s team could be the dark horse to win Super Bowl LX.

It has been a week since that event passed, and rest assured, there were no conversations about the Dallas Cowboys. But that did not deter the billionaire from declaring his team as early favorites to make the trip next season.

In this day in the NFL, you can go from a pumpkin to a carrot, so to speak. And you can do it in a year, or you can do it in two years. That is very promising to me. I’ve been there. I understand how it’s done. I understand how it’s not done.

Jerry Jones told TMZ Sports

The 83-year-old was trying to explain how nowadays a team’s prospects can change year-to-year. Be it injuries, roster construct, or just performance, a good mix of those can help a team take a leap.

On that note, Jerry Jones believes his Dallas Cowboys are well-positioned to make such a leap next season. It seems he is confident his offense will continue to purr, and so would his defense now that they have a new leader.

Jerry Jones believes in his vision for his defense

After standing his ground throughout the regular season, Jerry Jones finally fired defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus as soon as the offseason started.

Then, he went about hiring former Philadelphia Eagles passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach Christian Parker to lead the unit. On that note, Jones believes his vision will come to fruition.

We’re redoing our defense, and I’ve changed so much about the approach that we’re going to have with coaching the defense. So, kind of when you work for yourself, like I do, you have to change what’s in the mirror, so to speak.

Jerry Jones said

The oil and gas mogul seems to be talking about rethinking his approach to the way he constructed the team. That thought process probably led to Micah Parsons‘ blockbuster trade.

Now, with his reconstructed defense and possibly the right man to steer them, Jerry Jones believes his changes are about to come to fruition.

Jerry Jones’ Cowboys could be Super Bowl favorites

Even though there may be some who believe that Jerry Jones is back to his delusional ways, others might not agree. It so happens that the Dallas Cowboys are indeed primed to be preseason favorites to win it all.

In the first order of business, the owner-cum-GM has to find a way to keep George Pickens. Then, he has to look at signing some additional role players on offense.

But most importantly, Jones has to find a stud pass rusher either in the draft or through free agency. His rejigged defense is well-built for stopping the run, and might be better in the passing game than last season.

However, investing in a reliable every-down sack merchant would only go on to help. Otherwise, the defense runs the risk of being too predictable.

Once the roster is set and the coaches dial in their game plans, it should not be too far off a notion to think of the Cowboys as being Super Bowl LXI threats. They have the team to do it. Just that the execution has to come through.
