Trey Lance will not be starting for the Dallas Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones appeared quite stern on his decision, admitting it the team cannot take risks when they can have the best chance of winning with another quarterback. That is to say until Dak Prescott returns.
The Cowboys hit an iceberg after star quarterback Prescott sustained a season-ending injury, requiring him to undergo surgery. And the two-game winning streak that gave them hope of survival in the absence of Prescott vanished in thin air with the disappointing 27-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 14.
In the absence of the three-time Pro Bowler, Cooper Rush has joined the starting lineup but fans have been eager to see if the Cowboys have plans for Lance this season. However, after the week 14 demise, when Jones addressed the media, he ascertained that he would not be starting with Lance anytime soon in the 2024 season.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on @1053thefan said they are not interested in starting backup QB Trey Lance: "I don't think so. I thought we did some good things out there. I still believe (Cooper Rush) gives us our best chance. … Wins are important for us. This is a young team."

Despite acquiring Lance in exchange for a fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers, the Cowboys have been rather reluctant to push him forward. The only time he took the field for them was two games last year in November, which could mean that they might consider releasing him without giving him a chance to start.
Trey Lance’s contract expiration raises questions about future with Cowboys
Speaking of his future in Dallas, the quarterback’s contract with the Cowboys is ending this season as per Spotrac. Many consider the young quarterback as a project of head coach Mike McCarthy and since he is also said to be on the hot seat, Lance’s stint with the Cowboys might come to an end with him.
Besides the notion of being a “project,” the reason for acquiring Lance is widely considered to give the franchise leverage in the contract negotiations with eight-year veteran Prescott. Although there’s still time for the America’s team to extend Lance, the chances of that happening are quite low.
The 82-year-old Cowboys General Manager believes the team has the best chance of winning after Prescott is with backup Rush and until their franchise quarterback returns from his season-ending injury, they are considering keeping the quarterback position stable with Rush.
