Micah Parsons‘ words echoed loud and clear in Dallas. And it only took a couple of days to receive a reply. In his routine appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jerry Jones addressed Parsons’ online meltdown.

Parsons was AWOL for a few days as he got surgery on his torn ACL. While he was away, the Cowboys released his good friend Trevon Diggs from the team. Parsons’ team, the Green Bay Packers, swooped in to claim the All-Pro cornerback.

Dallas-based media backed Jones’ decision to crack down on Diggs, pointing to his declining stats since becoming one of the league’s highest-paid defensive backs. Parsons didn’t like the unwarranted character assassination and spoke out against it.

The focus shifted from Diggs to Parsons. Rather than taking back his words, Parsons stood by them and refused to apologize to the Cowboys fanbase for leaving the team to sign a record-breaking deal in Green Bay.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus‘ recent comments suggest that he clearly wasn’t a fan of the move.

Parsons would still be in Dallas if he had not engaged in a feud with Jones in his contract year. Both parties got what they wanted. The Cowboys didn’t have to give the Penn State grad a big payday anymore, and Parsons ended up joining a team built for the playoffs.

Micah joined an elite list of players to record at least 12 sacks in their first five years of league football. Jones brought in a couple of experienced players to fill the void left by Parsons. However, the Cowboys struggled to stop the run all year and ranked near the bottom of every defensive metric.

Meanwhile, the 9-6-1 Packers squeezed into the playoffs and should play wildcard football. The 7-8-1 Cowboys, on the other hand, were eliminated from the playoffs in week 16. Despite the outcome, the Cowboys’ owner/general manager claimed that he made the right choice by cutting ties with one of the best defensive players of the current generation.

I wish Micah [Parsons] the very best… I’d love to have Micah on the team. But we just couldn’t afford him. We wanted 4-5 players more than we did him. But he’s outstanding. I understand his sensitivity and can even understand these comments.

Parsons wanted out of Dallas after Jones didn’t want to deal with his agent. Jones likes the traditional approach of negotiating directly with the player. Parsons held out from practice the entire training camp and OTAs. However, his actions during the Cowboys’ pre-season game ticked off Jones the most.

Not one time, not even in the hottest of days and two-a-days in August in Texas, between eleven in the morning or when they quit practicing or four in the afternoon, did I ever see any one of these two go over and lie on a damn training table in front of a million people.

The difference of opinion ended Parsons’ relationship with the Cowboys. The Cowboys definitely drew the short end of the stick and missed the playoffs. They finish the year with a trip to the Big Apple to play the New York Giants.
