For Jerry Jones, his 82nd birthday turned out to be far from how he expected. The Dallas Cowboys lost their fourth straight game at home and by a significant margin to the Detroit Lions. Since then, the owner and general manager of the team have not taken kindly to being blamed for the situation the team finds itself in.

The criticism has been that the Dallas Cowboys failed to make adequate offseason moves and improve their roster. Jerry Jones, in his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan, lashed out at reporters for doing their job and threatened to replace them if they continued to question his actions. His tone was stern and he was angry while making these comments, however, Jones clarified to The Athletic’s Diana Russini that he was not yelling.

Jones’ logic was that he receives enough flak from fans and critics as is. He does not deserve more of it from individuals that are on his payroll.

I don’t know that I would go as far as [calling] the volume connotation as yelling. OK? But the facts are that if I’m going to be grilled by the tribunal, I don’t need it to be by the guys I’m paying. I can take it from fans and take it from other people. I take a lot of pride in how fair and how much I try to work with the media, we’re brothers and sisters. But I was a little frustrated there today.

Jerry Jones clarified

Jones thinks that he is cooperative with the media. He views the relationship between them as a bond shared by siblings.

Jerry Jones took issue with the people questioning the Cowboys’ inactivity in the offseason rather than the topic itself

The owner believes that he was being questioned by the wrong bunch of people who “would have liked to have grilled (him) like the fans are thinking.” It was not the question and topic of the Cowboys’ inactivity in the off-season that bothered him. It was that the ones grilling him did not know what they were talking about.

The wrong ones were doing the questioning. Now, if those had been real fans sitting there or if there had been people who knew what they were talking about, football people. I might have had a different answer.

Jerry Jones added

Jones has not been able to keep his frustration with his team hidden. The Cowboys having a bad season because of a silent offseason is a point that keeps recurring every week and the fingers keep pointing to Jones as the problem.

The major investments he made were in Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb right before the season began. However, on Sunday, the quarterback had 2 interceptions and failed to get the offense going. Lamb was helpless as the Lions’ defense was all over him.

Another question that Jerry Jones frequently receives is regarding his head coach Mike McCarthy. But it would seem that he is likely to retain the job for the remainder of this season as the owner continues to be confident in his abilities.

Mike McCarthy’s decision-making has been in question after he hired Mike Zimmer to coach an elite Cowboys defense. However, this season, that defense has looked far from elite and they find themself being run over, quite literally by opposing teams as they scramble to look for solutions to stop them from rushing. Despite what Jones has seen from his team so far this season, he is not considering making any moves before the trade deadline. “Not thinking that,” the owner responded and affirmed faith in his existing roster and personnel.
