A lot of water has passed through the Red River since the Dallas Cowboys announced the trade of Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. It’s too early to judge which team won the trade. Regardless of the outcome, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes that parting ways with Parsons was the correct decision.
Parsons entered the final year of his contract with the Cowboys and held out for a long-term deal until the final weeks of the 2025 offseason. Signing a generational talent seemed like a no-brainer for the Cowboys, but Jones had other plans.
The veteran general manager traded the 2x All-Pro and 4x Pro Bowler to the Packers in exchange for DT Kenny Clark and a handful of draft picks. Three months later, the Cowboys are 6-5-1 and occupy the 9th seed, while the 8-3-1 Packers are sixth after 12 games.
Despite boasting a worse record than the Packers, Jones believes that it was the right move to trade Parsons away. In his team’s defense, Jones argued that they weren’t winning crucial games with Parsons.
Micah [Parsons] is very impactful, but we really hadn’t won with Micah. No, because of Micah. We just hadn’t won because (the opponent) was able to work around us having Micah.
Jerry Jones said during his routine appearance on 105.3 The Fan
Parsons may be one of the best pass rushers in the game, but he suffers when called to stop the run. According to Pro Football Focus, Parsons rates a 93.2 (Myles Garrett 93.5), but is a mediocre run-stopper, ranked No. 38 among pass-rushers with a 66.3 rating since the trade.
Parsons has 12.5 sacks (five consecutive seasons with at least 12 sacks) and 12 tackles for loss, plus 67 pressures and a 24.3% pass rush win rate (averaged 0.89 sacks and one tackle for loss per game).
These numbers matter little to Jones. He’s content with the players he has in Dallas. Moreover, the Cowboys managed to poach a couple more to strengthen the roster even further.
There was no question that if we could replace him with four or five top players, (George) Pickens-type players … that was all in the thinking with Micah Parsons.

Jerry Jones wanted to trade Micah Parsons to the New York Jets
During the same segment of 105.3 The Fan, Jones revealed that he spoke with the Jets general manager, Darren Mougey, prior to sealing the deal with the Packers. Jones proposed a draft pick and Parsons in exchange for DT Quinnen Williams.

I wanted a one and Parsons for Williams… A one and Parsons for Williams.

Jones told WFAA’s Cowboys beat writer, Ed Werder, that he was ready to send Parsons to the Big Apple. However, the Jets’ front office did not want to entertain the offer due to a lack of resources.
We tried at training camp with the Jets to basically make an exchange that was ready to go, heads up, with Quinnen and Micah and a 1, and we didn’t get it done.

Of course, the Cowboys GM went back to the Jets for Williams before the end of the trade deadline. This time, the Jets accepted his proposal. The Cowboys traded a 2027 first-rounder, a 2026 second-rounder, and defensive tackle Mazi Smith to acquire Williams.
Williams has accumulated 2.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss this year. He also has 37 total tackles and 3 forced fumbles.
The Cowboys play the Detroit Lions next week. A win against the current NFC North champs could catapult them into the playoff running.
