There are times in an athlete’s life when it seems everything is setting them up for success. Garnering three All-Pro selections in his first four years in the league, playing a position that already has some outstanding talent should set Micah Parsons up for a bear hug from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Many felt he would get that hug sooner than Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb did when they were in line to get contract extensions. Both leading stars needed some time to pass before becoming the highest-paid player and the second highest in their respective positions.

Having Jones’ personal number should have made it much easier for Parsons to get an extension sooner than they did. Alas, that has not happened, and the star pass rusher and the owner are in the midst of a war of words.

First, it was the 82-year-old who made it clear that handing out a contract extension was the least of his worries. This brought out a seemingly sarcastic remark from the 26-year-old. Now, fans have joined in to demand that Jerry Jones pay Micah Parsons soon. However, it has not affected the Cowboys’ owner.

I heard it light, but not compared to how I heard them say, ‘Pay Lamb [last year].’ That was a faint little sound compared to the way they were hollering last year, ‘Pay Lamb.’ … Whoever’s not in, you can count on a few hollering that. But it was a big, loud chant last year on Lamb.

This was Jerry Jones‘ way of ridiculing his team’s fans who are trying to meddle with the situation. It seems the two parties are in a stalemate, as his son Stephen Jones described later on.

Stephen Jones questions Micah Parsons’ desire to be paid

Where Jerry Jones resorted to his usual time-honored tradition of ridiculing players and Dallas Cowboys fans, his son, Stephen Jones, was a bit more realistic. When asked about the chants from fans asking for them to pay Micah Parsons, he replied:

Micah Parsons is still waiting for a new contract

It doesn’t change anything. We want to pay Micah, too. He’s got to want to be paid, too.

The Cowboys CEO’s answer might perplex fans as the star pass rusher has done everything to indicate he wants a long-term deal. He wants to become the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history.

Maybe that is where the Jones’ are at odds with their best defensive player. What he wants and what they can afford are two different things. A surprising stance considering they made Dak Prescott the highest-paid QB despite him never matching the elite production other QBs have amassed.

Potentially, this is their way of piling the pressure on the 26-year-old to lower his asking price and get the distractions out of the window, and then get back to work in training camp.

Jerry Jones gives Jake Ferguson his money

Jones might be at odds with Parsons concerning his contract extension. But that does not mean the billionaire does not have other things on his plate. He has now given another deserving player an extension.

The #Cowboys and standout TE Jake Ferguson have agreed to terms on a 4-year extension worth $52M in new money with $30M total guaranteed. Ferguson gets a $12M signing bonus.

Ferguson might not have set ablaze his stat sheet, but he has done enough to garner a deal that will see him play with the star on his helmet for the next four years. This was smart business from Jones, considering the tight end spot is mostly hit or miss in this league.
