Reporters, fans, and folks back in Dallas were hoping to hear something positive about Micah Parsons‘ contract from Jerry Jones. However, the esteemed Cowboys owner/general manager threw a massive curveball to create more confusion.

Everyone already knew that talks had been going on behind the scenes. Each day, a brand new number would sprout as the All-Pro pass rushers’ potential salary.

Parsons had warned the Cowboys and Jones that his demand would rise depending on the market. Maxx Crosby, Myles Garrett, and, more recently, TJ Watt reset the market with their extensions.

Jones’ usual chirpy mood vanished when reporters questioned him about Parsons.

Just because we sign him doesn’t mean we’re gonna have him. He was hurt six games last year. Seriously.

The crowd had confused looks on their faces. Possibly, the same thought crossed everyone’s mind at that moment: why would an owner suddenly call out one of the best players on the team?

Fans on social media stunned hearing Jerry Jones’ statement regarding Micah Parsons’ contract extension

Jones’ concern has merit. He has every right to think long and hard before signing the $40 million+ check to an athlete because there’s always the possibility that he might pick up an injury.

Dak Prescott played just eight games after becoming the highest-paid NFL quarterback last season. Jones rightfully wants to avoid the same, but it makes zero sense to say that aloud, especially on the first day of training camp. Not to mention, Parsons was in the vicinity during the press brief.

NFL legend JJ Watt was not happy with Jones’ statement.

Anytime you can publicly take a dig at your star quarterback and your star pass rusher simultaneously, right before the season begins, you just gotta take it… Nothing makes guys want to fight for you more than hearing how upset you are that they got hurt while fighting for you.

JJ Watt tweeted

A screenshot showed that Parsons retweeted Watt’s post.

Despite the apparent swipe at the former first-rounder, Jones praised Parsons for showing up to camp instead of holding out like Trey Hendrickson in Cincinnati.

There’s no anticipation at all. We’re just working with what it is. It’s not uncommon for me, and it’s not anything there’s a lot of angst over. He’s doing a really good job of being here. And that’s important. … We are where we are. And I sign the check. Period.

The 26-year-old has amassed 52.5 sacks in four seasons. Parsons is set to earn approximately $24 million in 2025 from his rookie deal.
