While Jerry Jones holds high expectations from his star players, he shows considerable leniency towards the second and third teams, particularly quarterback Trey Lance. That’s why the Dallas Cowboys owner assured that he would be on the roster despite his poor performance in the preseason finale.

In the Cowboys’ preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers, starting quarterback Dak Prescott was given some rest, and Lance was asked to step up since he didn’t take any snaps last season. Unfortunately, throwing five interceptions overshadowed his two touchdowns including one with a 46-yard run.

Following the Cowboys’ 26-19 loss, the question began to hover over owner Jones’ head regarding Lance’s future in the team. Given, that the NFL teams are making roster cuts to 53-Man on the coming Tuesday, August 27. However, when he addressed the media, he dismissed all and any speculations, assuring the 2021 No. 3 pick will remain in Dallas.

I saw some good, and I saw some things you’d like to have back. I hate that those five interceptions are going to be a stat on a game that I couldn’t have asked for more reps and a better situation to watch him play. He needed that because the one thing he’s missing more than anything is the lack of reps much less NFL reps.

Before concluding his statement, he stated that the team is certainly “planning on him being on our roster for sure.” He completed the game with 33-of-49 pass attempts for 323 yards and two touchdowns.

Jerry Jones praises quarterback Trey Lance despite limited experience

Regardless of the five interceptions, the 81-year-old is impressed with Lance’s improvement which continues to get better after every practice and game. He claimed that the quarterback is excelling at many times he struggled with in his days. That’s what he is counting on for the future.

He’s doing a lot of things that he wasn’t doing as well early that he’s doing well now. I think we added it up the other day and he hadn’t had but about 1,000 plays in his career since about 2015.

When the Niners were trading Lance, no team came forward with a deal even close to what the Cowboys offered. But Jones has no regret over it as they also got Prescott by trading a second fourth-round pick. The fourth-round pick they spent for the trade of Lance could have been used on a running back or any other position to strengthen the offense but Jones saw something in him and was ready to compromise.
