Some major changes are on the way for the Chicago White Sox. On Thursday, the team announced that owner Jerry Reinsdorf has agreed to sell the team.
As per reports, the 89-year-old has reached an agreement with Phoenix Suns’ co-owner Justin Ishbia. He will have the option to sell the majority stake of his team to Ishbia from 2029 to 2033.
After the 2034 season, the billionaire co-owner of the Suns will have the majority controlling interest of the White Sox. Until the 2029 season, the Reinsdorf family will continue to own the team and control all operations. It is also important to note that there is also no assurance that any such transaction will occur.
Reinsdorf has been in control of the team since he acquired it in 1981. Since then, he has been the day-to-day decision maker for the American League Central franchise. In a statement released, he called owning the White Sox as a “life-changing experience.“
Having the incredible opportunity to own the Chicago White Sox and be part of Major League Baseball for nearly 50 years has been a life-changing experience. I have always expressed my intent to operate the White Sox as long as I am able and remain committed to returning this franchise to the level of on-field success we all expect and desire.

The White Sox have been struggling in the MLB in the past two seasons. Last year, they had the worst season in MLB history.
The White Sox lost more than 120 games and broke the previous worst record of 120 losses in a season, set by the New York Mets in 1962. Following some wins towards the end of the season, the White Sox finished with a 41-121 record.
This season, they have dropped in form again. While they did beat the their division leaders, Detroit Tigers 3-2 on Thursday and earned a split, they are still bottom of the AL Central with a 20-43 record.

Why wait? Jerry going to hold Sox fans hostage even longer. Sooner the better. While we’re still young! #whitesox

In Reinsdorf’s 44-year tenure as the owner, the White Sox have reached the postseason on 7 occasions. They have also achieved World Series success. In 2005, the American League side went all the way and defeated the Houston Astros to claim their 3rd World Series title.
White Sox GM recently spoke on team’s performance following announcement of Pope Leo XIV
Almost a month ago, a new Pope was announced. Following the passing of Pope Francis, Chicago-native Robert Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV, was announced as the new head of the Catholic church. After his announcement, Chicago White Sox GM Chris Getz spoke on the improvement in their team’s performance.

Pope Leo XIV is a White Sox fan. Long before he became the Pope, he would attend White Sox games and cheer for them. With him now being the new head of the Church, GM Getz joked that perhaps some high power was helping the team.
It’s been exciting obviously, to have someone of that significance be a White Sox fan. Since he’s been announced to become the Pope, the White Sox have tacked on some wins. So perhaps a higher power is on our side.
Maybe it’s not so much a coincidence the White Sox have been playing better of late, GM Chris Getz says, since the arrival of Pope Leo.

After the announcement of the Pope, the White Sox won 4 out of their 5 games. However, their form has since declined again. They have lost 5 of their last 7 matches and hold the second-worst record in the league (the Colorado Rockies have the worst) in the 2025 season.
