American pro Jessica Pegula confirmed that she would press pause on her doubles career with compatriot Coco Gauff and focus more on her singles for the rest of the year. Before this, Gauff also made the same statement to not focus on doubles.
Gauff and Pegula were one of the best women’s doubles teams from America and were put to the test at the Paris Olympics. Both Gauff and Pegula competed in singles and doubles. Unfortunately, it did not end well for them, as they lost early in all the draws.
After the loss, Gauff practically put a pause on her doubles career as she revealed that it is no longer her priority and will only occasionally play it the next year. She had focused more this year on preparations for the Olympics but now intends to focus on her singles.
No, I'm not going to be playing doubles. I just, the goal was to try to get as good as possible for the Olympics and then, yeah.Coco Gauff said via Canadian Open press
In addition to this, even Jessica Pegula agreed with her doubles partner. Like Gauff, even the American intends to focus on her singles career for the rest of the year after not having an ideal season this year. There is always the extra pressure of playing both doubles and singles, but with the Olympics out of the way, Pegula and Gauff play doubles.
For me, I'm not sure. I know Coco doesn't really, isn't interested in playing, or at least I'm not, we're not thinking of playing, so I probably will take it easy on the doubles the rest of the year, so, yeah, we'll seeJessica Pegula said via Canadian Press
Jessican Pegula marches on at the Canadian Open while Coco Gauff falls in the third round
Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff were the two Americans who were favorites to win this tournament. After deciding to pause on their doubles career, the two will be more focused on their singles career. Heading to Toronto, Gauff was the No.1 seed, who was desperate for a win since her Paris Olympics loss.
At the Canadian Masters, Gauff got a bye in the first round and moved on to beat Wang Yafan in the second. However, she failed to do the same in the third round. Gauff did not have any expectations whatsover and as she predicted, she lost early to Diana Shnaider.
With the top seed out, the others have a good chance at the trophy. One of them being Jessica Pegula, who will be up against her compatriot Peyton Stearns for a spot in the semi-final. A great opportunity for the American to gain momentum before the US Open.
