American WTA star Jessica Pegula had an interesting reaction upon hearing her opponent’s name for the Cincinnati Open 2024 final. As the interviewer asked her for her thoughts about going into an epic final against Aryna Sabalenka, the American misheard it as ‘Serena’ and gave an interesting reaction.
Pegula confirmed with the interviewer if they said Serena. The interviewer joked about announcing Serena Williams as Pegula’s opponent for the final, before asking her again about her feelings for the final.
Pegula started answering the question but burst into laughter midway through her answer. She then made an interesting comment claiming anything can happen these days.
You never know what's gonna happen these days.Jessica Pegula said
The American star took a sigh of relief when she was told that her opponent for the final was Aryna [Sabalenka] and not Serena [Williams].
Jessica Pegula eyes historic feat in Cincinnati
After pulling off a successful defense of her crown at the Canadian Open, Jessica Pegula is now eyeing another historic feat in Cincinnati. The American WTA star is one win away from pulling off the Canadian Open-Cincinnati Open double.
Pegula defeated Paula Badosa in three sets to march into the final in Cincinnati. The 2023 WTA Finals finalist was happy with her performance and touched upon her swift movement on the court.
I’ve been working a lot on my fitness and movement, especially being out. I had a rib injury so we got to do a lot on the lower body. I feel like I’ve been moving really great every single match the last couple weeks. That’s been really helpful and gives me a lot of confidence when I’m out there, especially in three sets.Jessica Pegula said after her win over Paula Badosa (via Tennis.com)
In the final, the American will face Aryna Sabalenka, who thrashed World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the other semifinal. Coming back from an injury, Sabalenka did not live up to the expectations in Washington and Montreal. However, the Belarusian has looked good in Cincinnati and will pose a tough challenge to Pegula.
The two players have faced each other six times on the tour, with Sabalenka leading Pegula 4-2 in the head-to-head. However, in their most recent clash at the WTA Finals last year, the American defeated Sabalenka in straight sets and will be hoping for a similar result on Monday (August 19).
