- Jessica Pegula reached the fourth round of the Miami Open after defeating Leylah Fernandez.
- She currently ranks sixth in the season for most aces, hitting 97 so far.
- Pegula aims to improve her game to compete against top players Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina.
Jessica Pegula is competing in her home tournament, the Miami Open, where last year, she finished as the runner-up, losing to Aryna Sabalenka. After receiving the walkover from Francesca Jones, Pegula knocked out Leylah Fernandez in the third round to schedule her fourth-round clash with Jaqueline Cristian.
Following her victory over the Canadian ace, Pegula spoke to reporters and was told that she stands sixth on the table of players with the most aces hit this season (97). The 32-year-old gave a priceless reaction to the stat.
Not sure how long that stat is going to live, so I need to like screenshot it.
Pegula has so far won four WTA 1000 titles, the last of which she clinched in this year’s Dubai Tennis Championships by defeating Elina Svitolina. Before arriving in Miami, Pegula suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of eventual runner-up Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells.
In Miami, the 2024 US Open finalist reached the quarterfinals in the previous three seasons. If she defeats Cristian, she will reach the quarterfinals of all the tournaments she has played this year.
Jessica Pegula on the challenge of facing both Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina
Sabalenka holds a 9-3 head-to-head lead over Pegula, also winning their last meeting in the round-robin stage of the 2025 WTA Finals. Against Rybakina, Pegula trails 3-5 and has lost both the matches she played against the Kazakh ace this year.

In her pre-tournament press conference in Miami, Pegula said she is trying to change her game to challenge the World No.1 and the World No.2.
I think a lot of the matches I’ve lost, you know, big matches, have been more or less to them or to Coco [Gauff]. I’ve done really well as far as improving my game and kind of knowing what I need to do. I think I’ve been playing a little bit more aggressive. I think I’ve been serving a lot better. Always kind of working on my movement and figuring out different strategies and plays that I think will work well against them.
Sabalenka and Rybakina played the finals of last year’s WTA Finals and this year’s Australian Open and Indian Wells. Rybakina came out on top in the year-end championships and in Melbourne, but lost in the California desert.
But they’re [Sabalenka and Rybakina] playing some amazing, amazing tennis, and I think rightfully right now they are the two best players in the world, just by their results and the matches that they’ve had flipping back and forth at big tournaments and finals.
Jessica Pegula added
If Sabalenka wins, she will become the fifth woman to complete the Sunshine Doubles and the first after World No.3 Iga Swiatek to do so. The six-time Grand Slam champion, who lost in the opening round, accomplished the feat in 2022.
Sabalenka knocked out Ann Li and Caty McNally to schedule her fourth-round match against 2024 Paris Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng, who knocked out Madison Keys in the previous round. Sabalenka holds a 7-1 head-to-head lead over the Chinese ace, last meeting her in the quarterfinals of last year’s Roland Garros, which she won.
Rybakina, on the other hand, eliminated Yulia Putintseva and Marta Kostyuk to schedule her fourth-round match against Talia Gibson. The two-time Grand Slam champion will be meeting the Australian ace for the first time.
Rybakina is a two-time finalist at the Miami Open, reaching the stage in 2023 and 2024, losing to Petra Kvitova and Danielle Collins, respectively. The 26-year-old has so far won two WTA 1000 titles, the last of which she lifted at the 2023 Italian Open.
