New York mayor Eric Adams appointed the second female commissioner of the New York Police Department (NYPD), Jessica Tisch, a role she will officially assure on Novemeber 25, 2024. While Tisch brings a wealth of experience, she also brings along a wealthy family name holding prominence in sports.

Jessica is part of one of the most prominent families in New York, the Tisch family that owns the NFL franchise New York Giants, along with John Mara. She is the cousin of Steve Tisch who is the Chairman and Executive Vice President of the Giants. Steve is known to be the only person with both the Super Bowl rings and Oscar for the Best Picture category.

Steve’s father, Preston Robert Tisch purchased the 50% of the franchise in 1991 and after his death, he took over the role of Executive Vice President in 2005. With his close collaboration with Mara, part-owner and President of the franchise, they designed and built the MetLife stadium in NYC, which finished in 2010 and in two years, it became one of the top-grossing stadiums globally.

Steve and Jessica’s grandfather was Laurence Tisch, who co-founded the Loews Coporation and held the CEO position at CBS Network in the 1980s, and established himself as a billionaire business. Jessica’s father, James Tisch took over the position of president and current CEO after Laurence. 

Her family is known for their philanthropic work in America, which includes several notable institutions, such as NYU Tisch School of the Art, the Tisch Children’s Zoo in Central Park and the Tisch Cancer Institute at Mount Sinai. 

Jessica Tisch breaks new ground as NYPD’s second female commissioner

Unlike the rest of her family, Jessica opted for a different path by joining the NYPD in 2008 after graduating from Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School. She was promoted to the deputy commissioner of information and technology role in 2014 before taking over as sanitation commissioner.

Jessica Tisch doesn’t have to be in city government. She’s here because of her love of the city coming from a family that has been committed to the betterment of New York City.

Jessica is succeeding Thomas Donlon, who was made intern commissioner since the resignation of Edward Caban in September. She understands that her primary responsibility will be to rebuild public’s confidence and trust in the police following the infamous five criminal investgations launced against the Mayor’s inner circle.
