Justin Fields chose to leave the Pittsburgh Steelers to join the New York Jets this offseason with the belief that he would get a chance to prove he was a franchise quarterback in the NFL.
Players do tend to move teams when they feel that a new structure and leadership would benefit them. With the Steelers, the writing was probably on the wall as they wanted a quarterback who could help them win.
Fields did not waste time and signed a 2-year, $40 million contract. The deal would effectively make him the starting quarterback over veteran Tyrod Taylor.
However, his performances have not been at the level of what a franchise QB should produce. Even Jets owner Woody Johnson publicly criticized his starting QB’s effort on the field.
Over the next few days, Justin Fields banked on his spirituality, and the Jets finally won their first game of the season. He was emotional, even though his performances were still not up to the mark.
Some felt that the game would be the turning point of his career. However, in their next win, and then their loss to the New England Patriots this week, Fields was not lighting up the board.
The Jets are making a quarterback change, benching Justin Fields in favor of veteran Tyrod Taylor, per source. New York faces Baltimore in Week 12 and ranks last in the league in passing yards per game.

It seems the Jets’ top brass and coaches had seen enough, and believe Tyrod Taylor gives them a better chance at airing the ball out to their receiving core.
Fans wonder if Justin Fields is done as a starting quarterback
There is no denying the fact that Justin Fields is one of the most dynamic quarterbacks when he is running. But when it comes to his passing game, there is a lot to be desired.
Fans know that the New York Jets gave him enough time to prove his worth. Now that they have benched him in favor of a journeyman veteran, they wonder if his time as a starting quarterback is over. Check out examples of those reactions below:

Great athletic talent
Not a great Quarterback
And apparently not a starting Quarterback in other cities outside of Chicago
Put him at RB and WR
He’s a phenomenal athlete and ball carrier
Utilize his ability and make him a Percy Harvin type of player
fields benching felt inevitable, jets need someone who can steady the offense right now. tyrod gives them a calmer floor even if the ceiling drops.

Absolutely outstanding PR run this lad had. Aura landed him 2 contracts, 3 teams, and millions of dollars.

Well, Justin consider changing positions to running back? Serious question.

A lot of people, not all, gave the Bears crap when they moved on from him and went to Caleb.

Best move that franchise has made in a while.
Time to become Lamar Jackson’s backup

Fields next stop should be somewhere where he can learn how to play QB, not somewhere where he can be a starter

Justin Fields could still find work in the form of a backup quarterback. His dual-threat abilities make him an option in certain situations that teams can use to exploit.
But when it comes to throwing the ball and setting up teammates to score, it seems the final nail has been hammered into the coffin of his starting quarterback career.
Justin Fields could face the axe in the offseason
The New York Jets hoped a 2-year audition would be enough to see how Justin Fields develops. However, it seems that the ship has sailed, and the franchise is likely moving on.

The team traded away some core pieces this past deadline with an eye on using those draft picks over the next two years, presumably on their next franchise quarterback.
That means it is possible that they may cut bait on Fields in the upcoming offseason. If he agrees to stay on as a backup, he could stay. Otherwise, they may look to sign other experienced quarterbacks to back up any prospect they select in the 2026 Draft.
The Jets would take on a significant $22 million in dead cap if they cut him before June 1st. They can trim that to just $13 million if they release him after that. However, that decision depends on what the team does in the upcoming draft.
