This past offseason, when the New York Jets announced that they were appointing Darren Mougey as their next GM, their fans were confused whether he was any better than former GM Joe Douglas.

The latter was instrumental in drafting stud young pieces such as Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, and a few others. Along with Quinnen Williams, who was drafted a few months before he arrived, Douglas had a solid run.

He did have his miscues, but the success of the others made him popular among Jets fans. However, that was probably not enough for the ownership, who weighed those decisions during the Aaron Rodgers era against him.

Mougey came in with a track record when he was with the Denver Broncos. Despite that, as is with passionate New York fans, they were waiting to see what he does with a rebuilding team.

His draft picks did not excite anyone, and it was further compounded as the Jets struggled to a miserable 1-7 start to the season. Then, as they went into their bye week, Darren Mougey came to life.

The first order of business was to send Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for two first-round picks and WR Adonai Mitchell. A few hours later, he sent Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys.

They received a second round pick next year, and a 2027 first rounder along with DT Mazi Smith. Then just before the final bell sounded, Darren Mougey signed off on another move.

They sent a 2028 conditional 7th-round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers for defensive back Ja’Sir Taylor. With those 4 trades, Darren Mougey had reset the roster, and set them up for the future.

Fans praise Darren Mougey for exceptional trade deadline moves

When these trades started blowing up notifications, New York Jets fans had their hands over their heads as they could not grasp what Darren Mougey was doing.

Then, when the details trickled in, smiles started to break out on their faces. They realized that the first GM had fleeced the likes of Jerry Jones and the Indianapolis Colts.

He now possesses five 1st round picks over the next two years, setting themselves up for a proper rebuild that aligns with head coach Aaron Glenn‘s vision. Fans believe the Jets GM just made himself a household name for now. Check out examples of those reactions below:

Darren Mougey still will be defined by what he does with those draft picks. The New York Jets still kept a couple of their core young pieces while letting go of those they believed were not fitting with their vision.

Justin Fields’ time with Jets might be coming to an end

Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn knew that to get to stage 1 of their vision, they had to first get through year 1. They probably knew the going would be tough, and believed giving Justin Fields a chance to prove himself could bode them well for the future.

Had he lived up to his potential, the franchise could have used these draft picks to address other areas of improvement. However, with Fields’ struggles, it seems his days are numbered.

Over the next two seasons, the NFL Draft could feature some good to great quarterback prospects. The Jets can take chances both times. They have the capital, which means they have the power to influence the draft.
