The New York Jets hired new head coach Aaron Glenn and General Manager Darren Mougey, but they face a significant challenge before the offseason officially begins. Owner Woody Johnson has stepped back from the responsibility of determining Aaron Rodgers’ future with the franchise, eager to see how Glenn and Mougey navigate the situation.

Rodgers’ relationship with Johnson is considered to be tainted as the two made several headlines amid the Jets’ struggling 5-12 season, where the franchise owner wanted to bench the veteran quarterback. The four-time NFL MVP has also been quite blunt about the whole situation, suggesting his future is in the hands of Johnson.

With the head coach and general manager positions now filled, the Jets face their next major challenge: determining Rodgers’ future. Interestingly, the 77-year-old owner has clarified that he will not be involved in this decision-making process, having delegated the responsibility to Glenn and Mougey, who are now tasked with revamping the team and ending their losing stint.

I’m going to leave that to them,” Johnson said, referring to the team’s new regime.

They’ve got to take a look at how the team’s composed and what they think they need and put all that together… I’m not going to voice my opinion on that.

Woody Johnson added

This implies that if head coach Glenn and GM Mougey decided to extend Rodgers, Johnson would welcome him, keeping aside their differences. The franchise owner has decided to trust them, so if they want the veteran quarterback back, they must have thought it through.

Aaron Glenn confirms communication with Aaron Rodgers

There have been rumors that the Jets’ new head coach is considering extending the future Hall of Fame Rodgers, however since the decision is not finalized yet, he was careful not to be too definite about it in his opening press conference after accepting the head coach position.

This thing is not about Aaron Rodgers. This is about the roster. And we plan on building the best roster we can. Aaron Rodgers will be talked about. We’ve already texted that communication with Aaron Rodgers. And as we continue to look at the roster, we’ll make decisions accordingly. And that’s with a number of people on the team.

Aaron Glenn told the reporters

Glenn refused to fall into the trap of media questions, as he replied with a subtle “winner,” when asked what he looks for in a quarterback. A new era is unfolding in New York and the authoritative presence of head coach Glenn may be exactly what the team needs to succeed.
