Taylor Fritz is set for a blockbuster clash against Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championship. The pair will be facing each other for the very first time at the All England Club. Ahead of the match, tennis legend Jim Courier revealed the only way Fritz can overcome the defending champion.
Alcaraz is seeking to win the Wimbledon for the third consecutive time and extend his Grand Slam tally to six at 22. The Spaniard has been in great form since losing to Holger Rune in the Barcelona Open final in April. In fact, he has not lost a match since then and is currently on a 23-match winning streak.
He claimed the Italian Open and then defended the Roland Garros. He then opened his grass-court campaign with a triumph at the Queen’s Club Championships before arriving at Wimbledon. On the other hand, Fritz has lost on one match on the grass court this season. He also claimed the Stuttgart Open title and defended the Eastbourne Open.
However, at Wimbledon, he has dropped a set in every match apart from his third round tie against Jordan Thompson, who retired in the third set. The American star had to suffer to win his opponents at the All England Club. He also holds an underwhelming 0-2 head-to-head record against Alcaraz.
Nonetheless, ahead of their clash Jim Courier believes that the only Fritz can beat Alcaraz is if the 27-year-old suppresses the Spaniard with good serves and powerful forehand. The tennis legend added during a discussion on Tennis Channel that he must not allow Alcaraz to pounce on him:
Look I think Fritz’s game is really very straightforward. He needs to serve well, he needs to rock the forehand when he can, and he needs to keep throttling the backhand and change direction with the backhand down the line from time to time. You need to keep Carlos at bay. You don’t want Carlos pouncing on you, getting to the net, using all his creativity. You’ve got to suppress that with your firepower.
Alcaraz is known for hitting variety of shots when playing against his opponents. Even though he sometimes lets his foot off the gas, he knows how to overcome very tough challenges on the court. Meanwhile, Fritz is a more direct player, but he also gives his opponents a chance to win an easy point.
Carlos Alcaraz ready for a tough semi-final clash against Taylor Fritz
Carlos Alcaraz is seeking to become the second man in the Open Era to win the French Open and Wimbledon for the second consecutive year. The first man to do so was Bjorn Borg. Also, he’s seeking to beat Rafael Nadal’s Wimbledon tally as the tennis legend only triumphed twice at the All England Club.

However, he has to first defeat Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals before hoping for that. During his press conference after beating Cameron Norrie in straight sets, he revealed that he looks forward to a tough clash against the American star:
He’s playing great. He’s been really successful: Two titles, semi-finals here at Wimbledon… I’m just going to be ready for that battle. It’s always tough to play against him. I will just focus, but right now I want to enjoy and live this moment because it’s really not easy to play the semi-finals here.
Alcaraz has won five titles this season and has already qualified for the ATP Finals in Turin. The Spaniard has been excellent for the most of the season and took advantage of Jannik Sinner’s suspension to claim titles. He will hope to extend his tally to six tour-level titles at the Wimbledon Championship.
