Jim Harbaugh has returned to the NFL and his excitement is well reflected in his voice as he addressed the media on the opening day of the training camp. It’s a New Year for the Los Angeles Chargers head coach, which he bizarrely compared to childbirth.
After a poor finish last season, the Chargers brought former Michigan head coach Harbaugh in a lucrative deal to reclaim the contender status. Since he coached Michigan to a 15-0 season and a national championship, the Chargers expect him to engineer similar success in Los Angeles. After a strategic offseason and draft moves, the team begins their training camp on Wednesday.
And Harbaugh, who returned to the league after a 9-year stint with Michigan, couldn’t be happier for the new beginning. Since the Chargers have entered their rejuvenation phase, the head coach’s childbirth analogy resonates well with them.
It's like New Year's Day. It feels like being born. It feels like coming out of the womb. You're in there. It's comfortable and safe, and now you're out. You're born. Lights are on, it's bright, chaos, people looking at you, people talking at you, and it just feels good to have it happen.Jim Harbaugh said during Wednesday’s press conference
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Harbaugh has made such a religious comparison between football and childbirth. Safety Derwin James revealed that he said the same thing during the team meeting, but to a great extent, the team understood where he was coming from and loved their new head coach for it.
Jim Harbaugh prioritizes player health during Chargers’ camp
Although the Chargers wouldn’t have the padded practice until the next Monday, head coach Harbaugh also discussed his goals and strategies for the first week of the camp. He shared that his biggest focus is to keep the team healthy.
Just making sure we don’t have any mishaps while we’re in this glide stage. In my experience, a lot of those injuries that happen in day one or day two are long-term. So, sometimes you have to pull them back a little.Jim Harbaugh added
Since moving to L.A. from San Diego, the Chargers had been training in a converted office building. Last year, they ranked 30th on the list of NFLPA report cards after getting a D-minus for the locker room, an F for nutrition, and an F-minus for the training area.
