The Los Angeles Chargers were for a long time, struggling to make anything out of their squad. A squad consisting of many Pro Bowl players who underwhelmed in the closing stages of several past seasons. It seemed as if the culture was not one which embodied a pure competitive spirit. This season, however, analyst Colin Cowherd believes Jim Harbaugh is changing that.

The longtime analyst was speaking on his podcast, The Colin Cowherd Podcast. There while discussing if the Chargers have what it takes to make a playoff push, Cowherd shared his take.

They've drafted very well. They've always done better than average on quarterbacks. They were just cheap on coaches. I told Dean, 'You're gonna have one of the 2 or 3 highest paid coaches'. He told me, 'It's changed our building. There's no negative so far. He just elevates the optimism, the wisdom'. I don't think it's crazy to suggest the Chargers are gonna be a Top 3 seed in the AFC.

Cowherd feels Jim Harbaugh alone will change the culture of the team which has been struggling for so long. They needed this to win their first-ever Super Bowl.

Colin Cowherd believes an environment should be present which will make players push themselves. That winning culture can bring out the best from fringe players and those who are not necessarily superstars. Harbaugh brings that culture.

Therefore, even though they do not have a decent wide receiver room, Cowherd is not worried. As Harbaugh’s history shows his teams never relied on an elite receiver core. Yet, they still made it to a Super Bowl and college championship games.

Jim Harbaugh will have his imprint on the Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers cleared their front office as well as their coaching staff before Jim Harbaugh arrived. They wanted him to start with a clean slate so that the team would embody what he wanted from a football team. One of the first tasks they went about was to clear out the wide receiver room.

A move which brought a lot of flak from fans, but it seems it supports what Colin Cowherd said above. Harbaugh’s system does not need elite receivers. Therefore, they moved out pieces that were aging and eating up cap space. They still have two pass rushers who are on monstrous contracts. But Harbaugh wants to see how they perform before moving past them.

That said, his teams have had an identity of a tough and gritty squad. With his draft pick and how the off-season has shown so far, it seems he is slowly bringing his imprint on the squad. Therefore, combined with his passionate approach to the game, the Chargers could surprise this season.
