Jimmy Butler and $3 million loss: Explaining how NBA star loses money from Miami Heat suspension

Jimmy Butler may lose a lot of money in bid for trade

Jimmy Butler is adamant that he wants a way out of Miami as soon as possible. The Heat star has made it abundantly clear to the front office that he does not wish to play in Miami. However, while his intentions to leave may be strong, the ensuing suspensions being handed out to him by the Heat might start taking their toll on Butler’s bank account soon.

According to reports, Jimmy Butler has already lost nearly $3 million given that the number of games he has been suspended for by the Heat keeps piling on. After the two-game suspension handed out to him by the Heat earlier this week, Butler’s total games suspended climbed to 9 just this month, which has caused him to lose a combined $3.1 million in total.

Butler loses a $346,000 paycheck for every game he stays suspended for. Until the Heat finally trade him, Butler could very well miss more games as the situation between him and the Heat only devolves further with every passing day. Thankfully though, there might still be some respite for the BigFace Coffee founder and owner.

Jimmy Butler approached the NBPA who are set to file a grievance complaint to the league about the Heat’s suspension of the 35-year-old star. While the verdict may take some time to come through, the NBPA hopes to win their complaint and reinstate any money lost by Butler. There may even be grounds for another complaint soon, following the Heat’s latest suspension.

Jimmy Butler seeks max contract with next team

The major holdup in any trade involving Jimmy Butler is his desire to secure a maximum contract by any means possible. At the moment, Butler is on the back end of a 3-year $146.4 million contract extension which he signed with the Heat in 2021. Under his current contract, Butler is set to earn $52.4 million next season on the last year of his deal which includes a player option on the last year.

However, Butler is looking for even more. According to reports, the Heat star is only looking for trades to team’s that are willing to hand him his desired contract extension. However, with his current situation, only the Heat can offer him the highest possible contract with a possible 2-year $112 million contract extension which would see Butler earn nearly $58.5 million at the back end of his deal.

If he does plan to sign with any other team, say, the Memphis Grizzlies, the maximum extension he could go for would be a 2-year $111 million deal. Even so, those aren’t light numbers, and most teams in the league are not equipped to handle that massive a contract alongside their current rosters without cutting corners or going deep into the luxury tax according to the new CBA rules.

Time will tell if any team actually ends up rolling the dice for Jimmy Butler as he rapidly approaches the final stages of his career. Only a team with a roster already set to compete at the highest level can afford to take a swing at Butler for a chance at winning the Larry O’Brien trophy.
