Carlos Alcaraz couldn’t complete the Channel Slam this year as he failed to defend his Wimbledon title. He was up against his arch rival Jannik Sinner, who came from a set down to secure his first title at SW19, becoming the first Italian player to capture the title here.

When Alcaraz won the first set, the 23-year-old increased his aggression and did not let his concentration waver even for a moment because he knew that he was up against a player who could bounce back at any time. Alcaraz tried his trademark drop shots to take Sinner by surprise, but the South Tyrol native was ready for those shots as well.

During the final, Sinner’s high-quality tennis started to frustrate the five-time Grand Slam champion, who yelled to his team that the World No.1 was playing better than him. Former player Jimmy Connors, during his Advantage Connors podcast, said he would have never made that type of admission during matches.

That is a tough thing to admit. I don’t know if I would ever have admitted that. No matter what, you have to get in there, mix up your game a bit, or try to do something a bit different. I know I say that a lot, but if your game number one is not winning, you have to figure something else out.

Sinner has now improved his head-to-head record over Alcaraz to 5-8. Before the Wimbledon final, the 23-year-old had lost five consecutive matches against the Murcia native, including in the French Open final, where he squandered three championship points in the fourth set. Sinner and Alcaraz are now 1-1 in Grand Slam finals.

Alcaraz’s victory would have made him only the second man after Bjorn Borg to complete the Channel Slam for consecutive seasons. He would have also become only the fifth man in the Open Era after Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic to win three Wimbledon titles in a row.

Marion Bartoli lauds Carlos Alcaraz’s conduct after his Wimbledon defeat to Jannik Sinner

When Jannik Sinner won the Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz, he ran toward his family and team members to share an emotional embrace. Alcaraz was seen clapping along with the Centre Court crowd, and this conduct of his has impressed former player Marion Bartoli.

He is actually now clapped by Carlos Alcaraz, who is sitting on his chair, clapping the performance of Jannik Sinner and his whole team as they embrace together. I can’t start to even imagine what they’ve been going through until this final, until this rematch, until this revenge.

Marion Bartoli told BBC Radio 5 Live

Sinner lifted his second title of the season at Wimbledon. Back in January, he defended his Australian Open title by breezing past Alexander Zverev.

At SW19, the five-time Grand Slam champion played his seventh final of the season. He entered Wimbledon after lifting his fourth grass-court title at the Queen’s Club Championships. Apart from the Queen’s Club and the French Open, Alcaraz has captured titles in Rotterdam, Monte Carlo, and Rome.

Both players will next be shifting their focus onto the North American hard-court swing, where Alcaraz failed to win a title last year. He lost the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open without making deep runs. Alcaraz lifted his career’s first Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open.

Sinner lifted both the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open by beating home favorites Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz, respectively. Last year, he had won seven of his eight official titles on hard-court, including the Australian Open and the US Open.
