Jinder Mahal is arguably the most successful Indian wrestler to ever step foot in a WWE ring. However, he, along with Indus Sher members Veer Mahan and Sanga, were released from the company in April. There was a time when The Modern Day Maharaja was at the peak of his career as a heel WWE Champion and was scheduled to work with Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series in 2017.
Unfortunately, AJ Styles defeated him to become the new WWE Champion and went on to face Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series. There have been many rumors that The Beast Incarnate refused to work with Jinder Mahal. However, on a podcast with Chris Van Vliet, Mahal revealed the actual reason why the match didn’t happen.
Mahal stated that Lesnar just didn’t feel the spark between them, as both stars were heels at the time. He and Lesnar suggested to Vince McMahon that Styles would be a better option for a match on a big stage. Ultimately, that’s what happened, and the match was, as expected, phenomenal. The 38-year-old star said that the decision was made on the same day he lost the title.
The headline came out, ‘Brock Lesnar refused to work with Jinder.’ I don’t think he refused. I just think it was he probably pitched for a match with AJ because stylistically, it is a much better match. Me and Brock are both heels. Who’s gonna put heat on who? Mahal’s start to 2024 was fascinating, as he had a segment with The Rock on Raw Day 1 and also received a title opportunity against Seth Rollins. Unfortunately for him, The Visionary defeated him, and he then transitioned into more of a managerial role with Indus Sher. In the end, Mahal admitted that he was fine with the decision to remove him from the match, as he knew he would eventually lose his title.
Jinder Mahal revealed the frustrations with the end of his WWE run
The Modern Day Maharaja’s release from the Stamford-based company surprised many fans. Just a few months earlier, he had the opportunity to become the world champion. Mahal revealed how his frustrations grew over time, leading up to his departure from WWE.
In the same interview, the 38-year-old star found it strange that he wasn’t included in the Royal Rumble match. He, along with Veer Mahan and Sanga, had a conversation with TR about their future. After a few months, WWE released them, and after 90 days, Mahal became a free agent. The former World Champion had decided he would pursue other opportunities after his contract expired.
Also, myself. Started off the year with The Rock, had the WWE Championship match. One week later, I'm not in the Royal Rumble, which I thought was very weird. We talked to TR and said, 'Listen, if there's nothing for us, we can go our separate ways.' Sure enough, a few months later, we went our seperate ways.Jinder Mahal via The Insight
Speaking about his future as a wrestler, Mahal stated that he was excited to work on the indie circuit. He even mentioned that the indie circuit had been doing amazing recently. The Modern Day Maharaja will battle Dominic Garrini at BLP Old Habits Die Screaming on July 27.
