The Minnesota Vikings have finally made the decision and to everyone’s surprise, newly-drafted JJ McCarthy is not going to be their starter in week 1. The team has decided to get started with Sam Darnold as their No. 1 quarterback while heading into the 2024 season.
When the Vikings lost Kirk Cousins to the Atlanta Falcons, it was highly anticipated that whoever they’ll draft this offseason would be their starter. Fortunately, they got their hands on a former Michigan standout quarterback with a remarkable winning record of 27-1 and drafted him using the 10th overall pick.
Since the beginning, head coach Kevin O’Connell has been rigid over his decision to let McCarthy take the starting position when he is finally ready. They drafted him with the belief that he would be their franchise quarterback. For now, the Vikings do not wish to impose the rookie with high expectations that he start feeling overburdened which may affect his performance.
