JJ Redick is self-admittedly one of the biggest students of the game. Few know the ins and outs of the game like he does, as was evident with his attention to detail during his Mind the Game and Old Man and the Three podcasts. While he has now translated that attention towards becoming the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, even he could not be bothered by the lackluster All-Star Weekend.
The NBA All-Star Weekend is the league’s marquee midseason exhibition game and a must-watch spectacle showcasing the league’s best talent. However, it has faced increasing criticism in recent years for its lack of competition and overall excitement. JJ Redick reflected this sentiment, delivering one of the most brutally honest assessments of the weekend.

Speaking to reporters at the Lakers’ facility on Tuesday, Redick was asked to evaluate rookie Dalton Knecht’s performance in the Rising Stars game during All-Star Weekend. After all, he will return to the team after the trade deadline debacle. However, Redick really didn’t have much to say, instantly dismissing any questions about events from the All-Star festivities.

JJ Redick’s dismissal of the All-Star festivities wasn’t just an offhand remark, though. It reflected one of the biggest problems in the NBA right now: how to make the All-Star Game relevant again. While some fans found Redick’s brutal honesty hilarious, to most, it came off as an indication of how much the All-Star Game has lost its credibility. The All-Star Weekend is supposed to be a celebration of the league’s biggest stars, but it’s becoming clear that even those within the NBA ecosystem are losing interest.
The comments of Lakers’ coach will continue the debate about whether the league is truly doing enough to bring back the competitiveness that once made the game special. Many of the NBA’s biggest stars opted to sit out portions of the event. LeBron James withdrew from Sunday’s All-Star Game due to lingering ankle issues, and the dunk contest was noticeably absent without the league’s top dunkers.
