Last year, when JJ Redick dipped his feet for the first time into coaching, he led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 3rd place finish in the hotly contested Western Conference.
This season, as is usual with the franchise, the expectation is a championship. The sense of urgency is high, considering it might be the last year LeBron James plays in the NBA.
Even if he does continue to play, Redick is tasked with pushing for an 18th title, as the purple and gold franchise wants to get back its bragging rights as the winningest team in the league.
When they were bundled out of the playoffs last season, the 41-year-old coach emphasized that his team needed to get into championship conditioning.
While playing their 7th game, he was seen trying to emphasize another aspect that has been the bane of Lakers teams of the past few seasons. A couple of minutes into the 4th quarter, the home team held a 5-point lead over the Miami Heat.
But as the visitors came down to their side of the court, they easily scored a basket to reduce the deficit to 3 points. Watching this sequence, JJ Redick called a timeout and walked onto the court.
He was yelling and cussing out his players, visibly upset with their lack of effort on the defensive end with the game that close. He continued to yell at them as the players walked over to the bench.

Only after his assistants came towards him with the whiteboard did the former sharpshooter calm down. That mid-game coaching was necessary, as the Heat were threatening to steal the game.
JJ Redick’s reset helps Lakers win by 10
The Miami Heat had staged a furious rally in the 3rd quarter to reduce their halftime deficit to just 4 points. Possibly, JJ Redick was wary of another rally and wanted his players to lock in.

After that yelling session, it seems his tactic worked. The home team regrouped and did their part to end up winning the game 130-120. Finishing with a 10-point margin proves that their head coach’s methods worked.
Last season, there were times when the men in purple and gold lacked effort. For the most part of this game, they were locked in, as was evident by the number of turnovers they forced from a team that is known to be well-drilled.
Even if their rim protection was not up to the mark, the winning side notched double the number of steals. Redick wanted that dedication throughout the game, which explains his outburst.
Jake LaRavia gets praised for his effort on both ends of the floor
When the Los Angeles Lakers signed Jake LaRavia in the offseason, they were essentially building for the future. He was a two-way threat that needed polishing, and who better to do that than JJ Redick?
As an underrated player, the 24-year-old quietly goes about his task, scoring and defending the perimeter. He came to prominence when his effort stumped the likes of Anthony Edwards in their 5th game of the season.

This was former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins giving praise to the Wake Forest alum. He realized the 6′ 7″ guard is not just a good scorer, but can also step it up on defense, as was evident from his game-leading 4 steals.
