LeBron James is entering his 23rd season, which happens to be closer to the end of his illustrious career. At this stage of his career, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar knows that nothing he does will change the surrounding narratives.
Over the course of the past few years, he has dealt with increasing criticism, especially after he proclaimed himself as the NBA’s GOAT. That seemed to tick off many people, and since then, his name has become fodder for rage-baiters.
It seems the Akron native has figured out how to play into it and use it to his advantage. He teased his ‘2nd Decision’ yesterday, sending alarm bells ringing across the world.
Many felt it was him creating a farewell tour this season and was about to announce his retirement at the end of this campaign. Those clips ended up racking millions of views and thousands of comments.
At 12pm EST, the complete video was released, and it featured him talking about taking his talents to help Hennessey VSOP scale markets. He continued to say that he wants to win at hosting parties, impressing guests, etc.

All of this was part of the commercial, and it sent social media into a meltdown. While many claimed LeBron James had not done right by fans, his head coach JJ Redick had a different reaction when speaking with reporters after practice.
You guys are idiots. We all knew it was an ad right? Most people that texted me were also aware this was probably an ad. Nobody was freaking out.

The recently-extended Lakers coach had a smile on his face knowing how his oldest player successfully tricked almost the entire basketball watching population.
LeBron James’ teammates reveal receiving concerning texts
JJ Redick probably knew through and through that this teaser and commercial were LeBron James‘ plan all along. Even his teammates knew about this, even though they received some concerning texts from their friends and family members.

I got a couple calls, like, ‘What is this?’… Obviously, it had the world by a hold. People were thinking he was retiring. I’m glad he’s not.

Austin Reaves was smiling when saying that he had to break it to those texting him that it was just a commercial. Rui Hachimura, on the other hand, had to double-check with his 4-time league MVP teammate himself.
Couple of texts, but I texted him too. He was using those weird emojis, I don’t even know what that means… He loves to do those kinds of stuff.

This shows that even the Lakers players were informed in advance about this commercial, and how the teaser would send the basketball world into a frenzy. But some were not appreciative of this stunt.
Skip Bayless tears into LeBron James for publicity stunt
LeBron James has made a lot of friends over the 23 seasons he has been in the league. At the same time, he also has a lot of detractors, especially a certain Skip Bayless, who does not leave a chance to take shots at him.
Come on, LeBron. Seriously? You’re that starved for attention?
Skip Bayless wrote on X
The longtime analyst believes this was the Los Angeles Lakers star’s attempt to draw attention towards him. Even though it was a stunt to garner publicity for Hennessey VSOP, Bayless believes this was The King seeking praise all along.

This is not the first time the 4-time champion has been part of an elaborate attempt to promote that liquor brand. It seems as he is heading towards retirement, James is doing all he can to push his brands into the spotlight.
