- LeBron James returned to the Lakers after a three-game injury absence, contributing 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in a win against the Bulls.
- The Lakers secured a postseason spot with their fourth consecutive victory, now holding a 41-25 record and third place in the Western Conference.
- JJ Redick praised James for adapting his role to support Luka Doncic, who is leading the league in scoring and becoming the team's focal point.
LeBron James made his return to the Los Angeles Lakers squad after missing his last three games due to injury. It was an impressive victory as Luka Doncic had his first 50-point game for the Lakers. The purple and gold registered a 142-130 win against the Chicago Bulls in a high-scoring game at the Crypto.com Arena on Thursday night.
It was an important win for the Lakers as they are assured of a postseason appearance and extended their winning streak to four games. The win propelled them to third place in the Western Conference standings with a 41-25 record.
Meanwhile, the Bulls are highly unlikely to secure a spot even in a play-in tournament as they sit at 12th place in the Eastern Conference standings and are 6.5 games behind the 10th seed.
Since acquiring Luka Doncic at the trade deadline last year, LeBron James and the Lakers management have made it clear that the Slovenian is the focal point of the team as they prepare for life in the post-James era. It has repaid so far as Doncic leads the league in scoring and is currently averaging 32.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 8.5 assists this season.
With James missing the last three games due to an elbow injury, the Lakers came out on top in all three matches. There were talks that the team functioned better without James in the lineup due to him being a liability on defense.
Head coach JJ Redick praised LeBron James for making changes and adapting his game since the arrival of Doncic.
I thought he was great tonight. He’s been a high usage player and the number one option his whole career and I know he wants to win and he wants do everything possible to help this team win even if it looks a little bit differently. He had to make some sacrifices when we traded for Luka last year. He understands how important it is for Luka and AR to have time on the ball.

Since turning 41, the King has shown no signs of slowing down and is averaging 21.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and seven assists in 45 appearances.
LeBron James on sacrificing his role for the team
After missing the last three games, James recorded 18 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists on his return on Thursday night. While concerns seem to be growing over his fit alongside Doncic and Austin Reaves, the Lakers will need someone of James’ caliber and experience in the playoffs.
In his post-match locker-room interview, James opened up about the importance of sacrificing his role for the team.

If it benefits others, it benefits the team. The team is most important. … So yeah, it is a sacrifice. I know what I’m capable of still doing as an individual, but what’s important for this team, I’m able to adapt to … And that’s the only thing that matters.

For the first time in his 23-year NBA career, James is not the primary ball-handler and scorer of his team. It is a huge sacrifice on his part, but with Doncic at the center, the Lakers have their new face of the franchise.
Austin Reaves praises LeBron James for embracing a secondary role
While Doncic scored 51 against the Bulls, Austin Reaves embraced a larger scoring role and dropped a 30-point performance. With back-to-back 30-point games for Reaves, the guard has emerged as the secondary scorer for the team after Doncic.
While LeBron James acknowledged the importance of sacrificing his role, Austin Reaves was particularly impressed with the impact it had on the team.
He’s one of the smartest guys to ever play the game of basketball. His ability to adapt and figure out what the game needs is second to none. … When you have a player of that stature who’s willing to play the way the game needs him to play it just shows how selfless he is and just is a leader by example for everybody in this locker room.

The Lakers boast a 10-2 record with Doncic and Reaves playing together, highlighting their offensive partnership. Redick and his staff will need to figure out their best rotation with the playoffs approaching.
