JJ Redick reveals ‘duality’ approach to mixing young and old coaching staff

JJ Redick reveals duality approach to hire coaching staff, wants experienced and young coaches as his assistants on the Los Angeles Lakers

Now that JJ Redick has been unveiled as the 29th head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, the next task is assembling a staff which will assist him as he takes on the toughest job in the NBA. Considering his lack of experience, it will also be noteworthy to see who all make up the staff. However, Redick has an idea of how he wants his staff filled.

After the introductory press conference, Redick spoke with ESPN LA’s radio hosts Mason and Ireland. They asked him specifically about his assistants.

I will have the say of who our coaching staff is. But that doesn't mean Rob and I are not collaborating on literally every single position. We are completely aligned in that the front of bench should have experience. We definitely want at least a couple former head coaches in the NBA there.
JJ Redick said

Redick vouched for young and determined staff “behind the bench” to strike a balance.

Behind the bench, we want young, hungry, innovative, fresh self-doers, self-motivated, that's what we want behind the bench, and there's gotta be that balance. I want that duality.
JJ Redick added

JJ Redick knows how he wants his coaching staff to be filled, as he will need that duality of experience and youth to help him grow as a head coach. By duality it means, he would want the experience of senior coaches to help him navigate those situations which can only come from experience. Certain nuances which come from coaching the game over the years. Something that Redick has no experience in.

On the other hand, he wants young coaches to come in and challenge the established order. Only then can they have a clash of opinions which in turn can help the team succeed.

JJ Redick wants his staff to question him

JJ Redick knows that he is bound to make mistakes. Anyone doing a job for the first time does that. Therefore, he wants his staff to question him.

I certainly want people to disagree with me. I certainly wanna have conversations about strategy, game planning, where there is disagreement, and we can talk through it.
JJ Redick said

He is clearly suggesting that he wants his staff to not just be ‘yes men’. Something that will defeat their goals as an organization. This attitude will bode well for JJ Redick. Not only will he learn in the process, but disagreements mean they will discuss about the problem further. Only then can a proper solution be found. If there are no disagreements, then the Los Angeles Lakers will live and die by Redick’s decisions.

It seems unlikely for that to happen. A certain LeBron James will likely be asking the most hard-hitting questions. But JJ Redick is thinking long-term. He wants to succeed with this franchise.
